and the game looks like its starting, but then puts up some kind of error dialog window that has no text in it. Do I need to install DirectX with wine first?

This works, I tested the demo (not sure about he version though). There is a bug open about saved games. If you want to help us, see http://bugs.winehq.com/show_bug.cgi?id=358
