This is not silly, the project exists in the first
place to help to answer this question ;-)

If you want just to use Wine, binary package is,
probably, more convenient.
Source distribution is not that much more difficult
and is better suited for developers.

I expect you read the README file in the source
installation, right?
The preferred and easiest method of installation is
running the wineinstall tool (see the README).
Report the problems here if it fails.

If you decided to compile it manually, did you call
"./configure" before calling "make install"?
What exactly error messages did you get with "make
install"?

Again, report the details of the problem, version of
the Codeweavers Wine.

Be sure you uninistalled the previously installed
Wine.

In any bug report mention version of your operating
system.
