problems with the serial port

Hello all,
I know there have been some posts on
this topic before, but I am very new to
this, so I had some trouble decifering
exactly what I have to do to get this working.

I am trying to get a program which accesses
the serial port to receive data from a 3 degree
of freedom tracking device to work under
linux. The GUI loads just fine, but then I get
an error from the program (not WINE) that
says, can't access the tracker.

I am using wine date 11/23/01 from code-weavers.

My eventual goal is to get the drivers for the head tracker (minus the
GUI) running under win-lib, so that I can use them in my own program.

So I guess I start by printing out some debug data?
I am not so clear on how I do that. Sorry, I am sort
of a lughead when it comes to this stuff.

Any help would be apreciated
