Fully funded PhD position in physical/experimental/numerical volcanology of
large-scale ignimbrites at the University at Buffalo starting Fall 2025

*Description of the position:*
We are looking for a highly motivated graduate student to join our group to
work on a recently funded NSF study on the emplacement and welding of
large-volume ignimbrites. This collaborative project involves PIs at the
University at Buffalo (Greg Valentine, Stephan Kolzenburg, and Michael
Ort). The student will combine fieldwork and experimentation; this will
include field and laboratory techniques to measure physical properties of
geomaterials (including magnetic susceptibility, porosity, permeability,
and density) as well as numerical modeling. A central goal of this project
is to improve understanding of emplacement processes relevant to
pyroclastic currents that can deposit ignimbrites at more than 100 km from
their caldera source, and how the deposits cool and weld. Fieldwork in
Arizona will involve several weeks of detailed mapping and stratigraphic
logging at a range of elevations and weather conditions. Targeted
experiments will be conducted using novel experimental infrastructure in
the laboratory for Experimental Volcanology and Petrology at the University
at Buffalo. The derived data will serve to inform numerical models of the
emplacement process.

The PhD student will join a multidisciplinary research group and work in a
newly established experimental laboratory at the University at Buffalo. The
candidate will combine field observations of eruptive processes and
products with experimental volcanology approaches. This multidisciplinary
work be guided by all project PIs and will provide the candidate with a
strong and varied skill set to contribute to progress in research beyond
their doctoral study. Inquiries concerning this position can be made to Dr.
Stephan Kolzenburg (stephank@xxxxxxxxxxx). Candidates attending the 2024
AGU Fall meeting who are interested in a personal meeting are encouraged to
contact me for scheduling.

*Qualifications: *
The candidate should have a keen interest in learning to employ laboratory
and field techniques, and passion for physical volcanology (especially
explosive) and self-motivation to learn the relevant state of knowledge. A
decent math and physics background and willingness to apply quantitative
methods / numerical analysis is important, and some prior experience in
data processing/coding (Python, Matlab, R, or a similar language) would be
helpful. Willingness to travel for fieldwork and conferences is required.
Applications are encouraged from students holding a first-class degree in
Geology or Geophysics. A Masterâ??s degree in geology, volcanology,
geochemistry, or equivalent field is preferred. Research experience in
physical volcanology, petrology, geochemistry or closely related fields is
a strong asset.

*Work environment:*
The Geology Department hosts an active and diverse Volcanology program with
both research and teaching components

The PhD candidate will have full access to training courses and academic
modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Departmentâ??s
volcanology research group (

maintains strong interdisciplinary collaborations, and the PhD candidate
will have opportunities to develop collaborative research with several
centers and initiatives related to volcanology and natural hazards within
UB and internationally.
Expertise of other faculty at the department include field- and physical
volcanology, fluid dynamics and mechanics, a breadth of numerical modelling
techniques as well as geophysics, glaciology and remote sensing. More
