2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: Raymond Cas <ray.cas@xxxxxxxxxx> Dear Colleagues, We invite the IAVCEI community to submit abstracts to this extremely important symposium on the role of volcanologists and the consequences of communication, or lack thereof, in protecting lives and property around volcanoes.* The abstract submission deadline is 20th December 2024 at the IAVCEI 2025 conference website: * https://on-line-form.eu/iavcei2025sa/abstracts/index.php?coo=1 <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://on-line-form.eu/iavcei2025sa/abstracts/index.php?coo=1__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!b6YbF_s8Yi2Z19X6xa2OTjL-wr6-lFTNfVaXGdVSBgBbnKbnC3s7l6DiSptKyo24xKL4PNpPzQtALqSzDiIkuH8WjQ$> *Symposium description:* A number of factors contribute to loss of life and injuries during volcanic crises and periods of unrest, as shown by recent eruptions in the past decade. These losses indicate that, in many cases, the danger levels, hazards and risks involved have not been adequately communicated. In this symposium we explore the professional and moral responsibilities of volcanologists in communicating these issues to relevant authorities and organisations with the aim of protecting life and property, as outlined in the IAVCEIâ??s â??*Guidelines on Roles and Responsibilities â?¦â?¦.*.â?? (Giordano et al. 2015; https://www.iavceivolcano.org/iavcei/iavcei-guidelines-on-the-roles-and-responsibilities-of-scientists-involved-in-volcanic-hazard-evaluation-risk-mitigation-and-crisis-response/ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.iavceivolcano.org/iavcei/iavcei-guidelines-on-the-roles-and-responsibilities-of-scientists-involved-in-volcanic-hazard-evaluation-risk-mitigation-and-crisis-response/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!b6YbF_s8Yi2Z19X6xa2OTjL-wr6-lFTNfVaXGdVSBgBbnKbnC3s7l6DiSptKyo24xKL4PNpPzQtALqSzDiLBjVImJA$> ). We invite contributions that explore the roles and responsibilities of volcanologists, the factors that contribute to communication problems, including organisational guidelines, cultural and economic constraints (e.g. promotion of adventure tourism), local laws or lack thereof, the local insurance framework, political and government pressures, and media demands. We also invite case studies that address these issues. *Keynote Speakers:* Dr. Sara Barsotti, Volcanic Hazards Co-ordinator, Icelandic Meteorological Office, Iceland. Professor Richie Robertson, Director, Seismic Research Centre, University of the Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies, Ray Cas, Guido Giordano, Natalia Pardo Villveces and John Stix (Convenors) 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 ------------------------------
