Dear Colleagues

The USGS Volcano Science Center seeks to fill positions for Research
Geologists at multiple locations (Moffet Field, California; Vancouver,
Washington; and Anchorage, Alaska). *The vacancy announcement will open on
December 2 and remain open until December 16 or until 50 applications have
been received*. The vacancy announcement can be found at
*https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/821508900

The focus of the recruitment is for field-oriented geologists who can
conduct field studies on volcanic deposits (including lavas and fragmental
deposits) to elucidate volcano histories and processes, and to translate
that work into volcano hazards assessments. Some of the specific duties
will include, but are not limited to:

   - Engaging in field and laboratory studies to determine the
stratigraphy, structure, eruptive processes, and petrologic and geologic
evolution of volcanoes to improve the evaluation of volcanic hazards, the
development of eruption forecasts and hazard assessments, and fundamental
   understanding of volcanic processes.
   - Collaborating closely with research scientists within the science
center and with others at various locations within the Natural Hazards
Mission Area, Bureau, and outside scientific community to exchange expert
knowledge and plan and engage in larger multidisciplinary research projects.
   - Providing briefings to public officials, emergency managers, and the
general public regarding volcanic activity and hazards and related response
activities of the Volcano Science Center.
   - During eruption responses, assisting in operational tasks related to
   volcano monitoring and eruption forecasting.

All applicants should be mindful of the following:

   - *Applicants must be U.S. Citizens*, must pass a background
investigation check, and are subject to successful completion of a
   pre-employment physical.
   - There is a positive education requirement as this is a professional
series. If applicants do not have the required coursework, they will be
disqualified from further consideration. *ALL copies of unofficial
transcripts, including undergraduate degree(s), need to be submitted.* This
is especially important if applicants have attended multiple schools. Their
current school does not always list the transfer classes out. The
transcripts are needed to confirm that they have completed the required
coursework for the basic education requirement. This is required for ALL
applicants regardless if they are current USGS, or whether they are
   currently in the series.
   - Resumes should include a month and year, whether the position is
full-time or part-time, and include their relevant work experience
underneath each period of employment. Resumes should contain enough
details regarding their work experience for HR to determine whether they
   have the specialized experience.
   - All required documentation MUST be submitted prior to the close of the
announcement. All documents must be legible. Applicants can always e-mail
the HR contact person in the vacancy announcement to confirm that their
   documents uploaded correctly.
   - Applicants may also access the HELP section of the USAJobs site, which
provides more detail regarding the federal hiring process:

*For GS-12: *In addition to the basic education requirements, applicants
must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geology that
is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service.

Examples of specialized experience may include: Planning and executing
research in volcanic systems utilizing field, laboratory, or numerical
studies of volcanic processes and deposits including lavas and fragmental
volcanic materials. This includes experience with field analyses,
geological mapping, stratigraphic analyses, reconstructions of eruptive
histories, laboratory studies, and/or numerical analyses of volcanic
processes that are amenable to hazards forecasts and assessments.

*For GS-13: *In addition to the basic education requirements, applicants
must have one year of research experience conducting field analyses of
volcanic systems or processes in addition to conducting laboratory analyses
or developing numerical models to investigate volcanic processes, and
practical experience in translating geoscientific information to
non-specialists that is equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal
service.

Examples of specialized experience may include: Serving as an independent
researcher conceiving, formulating and conducting research investigating
the factors influencing the origin, timing, magnitude, evolution, and
impact of volcanic events and their hazards; working closely with Federal
agencies, universities, non-governmental organizations, and private
industry to facilitate research investigations; authoring reports,
publications, scientific journal articles, and/or other products of
considerable importance to the research situation; attending scientific and
interagency meetings to present research results and exchange information
within the scientific community; reviewing manuscripts and proposals of
other scientists; and working directly and responsibly with scientists of
other federal and state agencies and universities on technical issues
related to the research assignment.
