8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8 From: Andrea Di Capua <andrea.dicapua@xxxxxxxxxxx> Dear Everyone, The Commission on Volcanogenic Sediments invites you to its 4th webinar, titled: "Fan-Delta progradation following the 2008 Chaiten Volcano Eruption" by Javier Valdivia of the University of Auckland. Abstract Significant changes to the coastline have occurred since 2008, following the sudden eruption of Chaitén Volcano in northern Patagonia. The eruption, along with subsequent rainfall, triggered an unprecedented aggradation process in the nearby coastal area, affecting the depositional environment and leading to considerable geomorphological and shoreline alterations. The geomorphic response of the Chaitén River at its outlet initiated the unusual and rapid formation of a new fan-delta sequence within the former delta complex in the proximal area of Chaitén Bay. Consequently, the delta shoreline experienced progradation, accumulating on top of a modern aggrading alluvial fan system. This presentation discusses the findings from 20 years of shoreline changes in this volcanic-coastal area, including historical shoreline evolution, the relocation of post-eruption sediments, and the rates of erosion and aggravation. The webinar will be held on the 30th of November at 9 NZDT.
