It is an interdisciplinary course sponsored by Centre International des Sciences Mechanique and International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, but with a sedimentological bias. It should be of interest especially (but not exclusively) to all early career researchers (PhDs, post-docs, young staff) with an interest in turbidity currents, pyroclastic density currents, snow avalanches, submarine landslides, internal waves, and thermo-haline currents, amongst others. It will be available either in person or remotely, and for those attending in person there will be a one-day field trip to Palaeocene turbidites and mass transport deposits of the Julian Basin. The summer school will cover the following topics: Introduction to gravity-driven currents in the ocean; Dense currents: Topography and roughness I; Dense currents: Topography and roughness II; Buoyant currents I; Buoyant currents II. (lectures held by Claudia Cenedese - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, MA, USA) Introduction to powder snow avalanches; Dense avalanches and flow instabilities I; Dense avalanches and flow instabilities II; Powder snow avalanches and mixed avalanche. (lectures held by Jim McElwaine - DWoods Hole Oceanographic Institution, MA, USA) Gravity currents: Introduction and numerical simulations; Interaction of gravity currents with solid obstacles; Double-diffusive sedimentation from river plumes; Grain-resolving simulations of particle-laden flows. (lectures held by Eckart Meiburg - University of California at Santa Barbara, USA Turbidity currents in reservoirs, lakes and oceans; Some gravity flows on land: debris flows, lava flows, dense gases haboobs and volcanic plumes; Gravity flows in water: submarine landslides, sewage outfall, river plumes; Recap of field trip. (lectures held by Benjamin Kneller - University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom) Introduction to pyroclastic density currents; Pyroclastic density currents: Conceptual models and multiphase framework; Turbulent multiphase flow in pyroclastic density currents: Hazards I; Turbulent multiphase flow in pyroclastic density currents: Hazards II; Cheating friction: Runout of pyroclastic and related granular-fluid flows. (lectures held by Gert Lube - Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand) Introduction to internal waves I; Introduction to internal waves II; Gravity currents in two-layer fluids; Gravity currents in uniformly stratified fluids; Particle-bearing gravity currents in stratified fluid. (lectures held by Bruce Sutherland - University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada) Updates on the programme will be posted on the CISM website https://cism.it/en/news/preliminary-programme-2025/ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://cism.it/en/news/preliminary-programme-2025/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!ZziYtFg7_ufoxzLyjIeVgb-ccHGW-RNAT1d-Kaktrqd_DNkxK3_5OzHIp5dEJXBMyMrlTJMskfj0x-TqLHHhHbA-yw$>, where you can already find a description of the organisation and venue. We hope to see some of you there. Please also bring this to the attention of anyone whom you feel may be interested. 4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4 ------------------------------
