The occurrence of extreme rainfall events on unstable volcanic slopes results in the transport of considerable quantities of sediment by a range of processes, including laminar and rill erosion, mass wasting, and secondary lahars. In this presentation, I will examine the links between runoff, slope instability, and lahars by using examples from volcanoes in Mexico and Central America. These examples show that the temporal dynamics and the types of materials involved in mass wasting influence the types of lahars that may be generated. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for understanding the potential hazards they pose to communities and economic activities developed on the lower slopes of volcanoes.
