Submarine volcanology and emergency management

18 October 2024

FREE registration OPEN for virtual delegates (link below)

Organised by IEO-CSIC and GeoTenerife

   -

The free event will have a hybrid format (in-person and online) and all
delegates can make comments and question the panel
   -

The event will be bilingual, with comprehensive slides in
English/Spanish. Delegates can comment or ask questions in English or
   Spanish

On October 18, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) and
GeoTenerife will organise the â??III International #VULCANASymposiumâ?? at the
Canary Islands Oceanographic Center. This open and free-access symposium
will bring together a prominent group of national and international experts
in submarine volcanology. The event will also cover the latest scientific
advances and challenges in volcanic emergency management in the Canary
Islands, a critical focus for this type of research.

A comprehensive and multidisciplinary programme

The Symposium will offer a varied agenda including presentations by
prestigious experts, who will present key research results on submarine
volcanic processes, their environmental impacts, and the monitoring tools
developed to address these phenomena in the Canary Islands. Among the
speakers in the first session are:

   -

Dr. Eugenio Fraile Nuez (Spain), principal investigator of the VULCANA
Project (Canary Islands Submarine Volcanology) and scientist at IEO-CSIC
   -

Dr. Thibaut Barreyre (France), volcanologist and researcher at the
Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)
   -

Dr. Pablo J. González (Spain), volcanologist and researcher at the
Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology of the CSIC (IPNA-CSIC),
   -

Dr. Ulf Skyllberg (Sweden), researcher at Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet
   (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences).

The event will feature a special section dedicated to young researchers,
providing them the opportunity to present their latest work and connect
with established scientists in both the national and international academic
communities. Participants include:

   -

Juan Pablo Martín Díaz (El Hierro), predoctoral researcher at IEO-CSIC
   -

Dr. Alba González Vega (Gran Canaria), postdoctoral researcher at
   IEO-CSIC
   -

Dr. Jesús Alcázar Treviño (Madrid), postdoctoral researcher at the
University of La Laguna (ULL) and IEO-CSIC
   -

Dr. Eduard Puig Montellà (Barcelona), Marie-Curie postdoctoral
   researcher at IEO-CSIC
   -

Javier Cabrera (Gran Canaria), master's student at the University of
   Granada (UGR) and GeoTenerife Scholar.

This session fosters a collaborative environment where they can exchange
ideas and build partnerships with experienced scientists, thus ensuring the
continuity and evolution of submarine volcanology and emergency management
research in the Canary Islands.

Volcanic emergency management

An essential part of the symposium will focus on volcanic emergency
management, featuring key figures involved in responding to natural
phenomena. This session will present the CSIC Disaster and Emergency
Advisory Protocol, aimed at providing scientific advice in crisis
situations. Among the speakers are:

   -

Néstor Padrón Castañeda, Deputy Director of Security and Emergencies of
   the Canary Islands Government
   -

Dr. Inés Galindo Jiménez (Spain), Emergency Coordinator at CSIC
   -

Dr. Nieves Sánchez (Spain), researcher at the Geological and Mining
   Institute of Spain (IGME-CSIC)
   -

Dr. Stavros Meletlidis (Greece), researcher at the National Geographic
   Institute (IGN)
   -

Sharon Backhouse (United Kingdom), Director of GeoTenerife.

The session will include a roundtable discussion where the challenges and
opportunities faced by institutions in volcanic emergency management will
be debated, providing a space for reflection to improve coordination
between scientists, the authorities and communities.

An open access and free event

The â??III International #VULCANASymposiumâ?? is a free and open event, aimed
at anyone interested in submarine volcanology and emergency management.

MarineSciCamp, a marine science training programme for national and
international students run by GeoTenerife, is run to coincide with the
event. In collaboration with IEO-CSIC, the programme offers a residential
stay aboard their research vessel to assist in the monitoring of Canarian
submarine volcanoes; MATLAB and SciComm training. GeoTenerife offers
fully-funded scholarships to all its programmes, and prioritises Canarian
applicants in its drive to promote and elevate Canarian science
internationally.

Attendance will be both in person and via video conference, allowing for
broader outreach and access to scientific knowledge from international
experts while providing a direct platform for questions and comments from
the public. Attendees will receive an official certificate of attendance.
