2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: William Hutchison <wh39@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Dear all, This is an open call for self-nominations for a new VICS steering committee. The Volcanic Impacts on Climate and Society (VICS) working group has had a very successful run. Since 2015, it has been supporting interdisciplinary work on volcanic impacts on climate, environment, and society. It has run numerous international meetings, led a special issue of Climate of the Past, contributed to IPCC science and policy, and fostered the development of numerous highlight publications and data sets. The working group has been very inclusive and supportive of early career researchers and has become a nucleus for numerous successful research projects on VICS topics. More details can be found here: https://pastglobalchanges.org/science/wg/vics/intro <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pastglobalchanges.org/science/wg/vics/intro__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!aGlwdRhu4FzxT6UKkjhtBkDKlgz1PEcGEsF-msGwi1jyfx4nM8LdG-54oLoP47Q4IawKi_aGWawmNba4Dxxvj4Qs4w$> This initial incarnation of VICS as an endorsed working group in PAGES has come to its end, but we have received a lot of feedback that members are keen to maintain VICS as an active community. We have been told that PAGES would be open to a new volcano-climate-society working group, if the goals of the group are novel and if the steering committee is refreshed with new members. We are looking to recruit a new steering group that covers the broad range of VICS research themes, which will define the goals of the new working group, and submit a new working group application to PAGES for its expected call in Spring 2025. See https://pastglobalchanges.org/science/wg/wg-guidelines <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pastglobalchanges.org/science/wg/wg-guidelines__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!aGlwdRhu4FzxT6UKkjhtBkDKlgz1PEcGEsF-msGwi1jyfx4nM8LdG-54oLoP47Q4IawKi_aGWawmNba4DxxDxc5Kyw$> for more details on PAGES working groups and the application process. The new steering committee should also reflect the diversity of our growing community, in ways including but not limited to career stage, gender and geographical distribution. To self-nominate please include a CV and 1 page / 500 word motivation statement focusing on your research experience, your vision for a new phase of VICS and why you would like to be involved in its leadership. PAGES working groups exist over up to two 3-year periods, and so academic/professional stability is an asset but is not essential. Please email these to Matthew Toohey (matthew.toohey@xxxxxxxx) and Will Hutchison (wh39@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) by November 1 and pass on this information to anyone who you feel may be interested. Thanks and best wishes, Matt and Will On behalf of the (outgoing) VICS steering committee 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 ------------------------------
