The ancient maunga Karioi (756 m) sits cloaked in bush on the rugged west
coast of Aotearoa, New Zealand. Slowly chiselled by waves since the last
interglacial, this eroded volcanic landscape contains an unparalleled
geological record of lava flows, ash falls, cone growth and collapse events
from throughout the life of a stratovolcano.
Karioi lies at the northwest tip of the Alexandra Volcanic Group, a chain
of extinct basaltic stratovolcanoes, domes and smaller vents formed about
2.5 million years ago above a tear in the subducted Pacific Plate. Because
of this unusual tectonic setting, Karioi is one of only a few volcanoes on
Earth where arc- and intraplate-type basaltic magmas were erupted together
from the same volcanic system.
This study presents the first detailed geological map of Karioi volcano and
the nearby Okete volcanics based on the results of 30 years of field
surveys, recent aeromagnetic datasets and new radiometric ages. The
geological information is displayed at 1:25,000 scale on a high resolution,
hill-shaded basemap created with LiDAR.
The companion text provides notes on stratigraphy, eruption history, local
tectonics, and places Karioi into the wider volcanic context of Aotearoa
and the Pacific Ring of Fire. These descriptions are accompanied by
landscape and outcrop photographs, map plates and geological sketches.
