Hi Volcano Science Community,
*KÄ«lauea began erupting on September 14, 2024, following a magma intrusion
beneath Makaopuhi Crater.* For an eruption timeline, please visit: Eruption
Timeline
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/science/eruption-kilauea-middle-east-rift-zone__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!eSE67yq5Fd8KBlQ0gkXD9R3UuG42eodYre6bhgd3KLkX6aO39DBAIheJI5vPpdUPYbKsdagiVfonU62th6ptjqirrA$>
or
see the summary below.
On the evening of September 15, 2024, KÄ«lauea erupted briefly just west of
NÄ?pau Crater in the East Rift Zone (ERZ) between 9 and 10 p.m. HST. The
eruption occurred near the NÄ?pau campsite, covering 16,500 square meters (4
acres) with about 20,000 cubic meters (approximately 5 million gallons) of
lava, originating from a 480-meter (1,600-foot) fissure.
The eruption resumed on September 16, 2024, at 6 p.m. HST near Makaopuhi
Crater, posing no immediate threat to human life or infrastructure.
On September 17, eruptive activity intensified between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m.
HST, based on monitoring data from seismicity, infrasound, webcam imagery,
and GOES satellite thermal imagery. During a morning overflight at
approximately 8 a.m. HST, HVO geologists observed new vents opening in
NÄ?pau Crater. The fissure system has now stretched over 1.6 kilometers (1.0
miles) in the East Rift Zone, with lava flows covering 18 hectares (44
acres).
By September 18, an additional monitoring overflight showed that activity
had greatly decreased, with only weak low fountaining observed at one vent.
At 3:15 p.m. HST, eruptive activity restarted west of NÄ?pau Crater, with
lava cascading into the crater from the northwest rim.
On September 19, lava continued to cascade into NÄ?pau Crater from vents
located outside the crater, covering about two-thirds of the crater floor
with new lava by morning.
As of September 20, 2024, around 6 a.m., the eruption near NÄ?pau Crater in
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park appears to be waning. Eruptive tremor has
decreased, and S2cam imagery indicates that the lava falls into NÄ?pau
Crater have likely crusted over. Renewed episodes of unrest or eruption in
this region are possible with little warning. The Volcano Alert
Level/Aviation Color Code remains at WATCH/ORANGE. All current and recent
activity is within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, with no changes
detected in the lower East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone.

*CONVERSE *is actively monitoring this eruption by tracking activity
reports from USGS, staying informed with HVO on monitoring and response
efforts, and informing our community of the volcano's status. We are also
facilitating research efforts within our community.
*Updates from our USGS contact:*

   - Two quenched samples were collected, and two cameras have been
deployed: one is telemetered and publicly accessible, while the other
captures video lapse. You can view the telemetered camera here: S2Cam
   View
   <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/s2cam-view-napau-crater-east-rift-zone-kilauea-view-southwest__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!eSE67yq5Fd8KBlQ0gkXD9R3UuG42eodYre6bhgd3KLkX6aO39DBAIheJI5vPpdUPYbKsdagiVfonU62th6oy89gSww$>
   .
   - As of September 18, 2024, the new fissure and lava fall have damaged
the non-telemetered research camera on the rim.
   - Chemistry analysis at UH Hilo indicated 5.90 and 5.97 wt% MgO
(slightly evolved), suggesting that stored magma is currently being
erupted. The maximum reported SO2 flux was 11,726 ± 2,153 t/d on the
   morning of September 17, declining to 3,688 ± 1,349 t/d by afternoon.

HVO continues to monitor the Middle East Rift Zone closely and is in
contact with Hawaiâ??i Volcanoes National Park and the Hawaiâ??i County Civil
Defense Agency.
*CONVERSE* will keep following the activity of this eruption and will
provide further updates as it evolves. If you are interested, we encourage
you to propose on-site research or request samples by following the
instructions here: Proposal Guidelines
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://conversecenter.org/proposal-guidelines/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!eSE67yq5Fd8KBlQ0gkXD9R3UuG42eodYre6bhgd3KLkX6aO39DBAIheJI5vPpdUPYbKsdagiVfonU62th6qeXynaJw$>.
We also encourage collaboration among peers on proposals, as our goal is to
connect individuals in the scientific community to maximize the scientific
return on US-based eruptions.
We look forward to your questions, concerns, and proposals! Please always
feel free to reach out.
Best regards,
The CONVERSE Team
*NOTE: CONVERSE does not fund research and does not guarantee your proposal
will be approved. However, we will support you through the proposal process
and connect you with the appropriate contacts at USGS/HVO.*
