Session outline:
This session aims to discuss the many aspects of hybrid eruptive activity.
A hybrid eruption or eruption phase can be defined as a mixed,
explosiveâ??effusive, eruptive activity during which magma is simultaneously
erupted as both lava and tephra. While the triggering mechanisms are still
poorly understood, and comprehensive models are lacking, there is growing
evidence suggesting that hybrid eruption phases are common features of
eruptions of both mafic and silicic magmas, with recent examples at Cumbre
Vieja (2021), Spain, and Cordón Caulle (2011), Chile. Many key themes still
need to be addressed to better understand this type of activity, for
example: how do magma ascent and conduit-vent geometry affect hybrid
activity? Are there peculiar fragmentation processes and limits to
explosivity? How well can we identify the products of a hybrid activity
associated to unwitnessed eruptions? Finally, what dedicated risk reduction
plans should be implemented for hybrid eruption crisis and how this
translates to eruption scenarios at active volcanoes? We welcome
contributions covering the (i) dynamics, (ii) product analysis (iii)
volcanic hazards and impact, and (iv) main characterization through
monitoring and direct observation strategies to enhance discussions on the
recent advancements and knowledge of hybrid activity.
