Hi all,
we are currently seeking for two specialists to join us in monitoring the
Icelandic volcanoes!!

* 1. Specialist in the field of volcano geodesy - Volcano monitoring *

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) is seeking a volcano geodesy
specialist, to join the Department of Volcanoes, Earthquakes and
Deformation within the Section of Services and Research.
We are looking for a candidate with experience in both analytical and
numerical modelling to monitor volcanic unrest in Iceland. Experience with
geodetic inversion of ground deformation data (both InSAR and GNSS
observations) is required. Furthermore, it is expected that the candidate
will work on product development utilizing such data to enhance the natural
hazard monitoring efforts at IMO. This is a full-time, permanent position.
IMO is a public institution responsible for monitoring natural hazards
nationwide and providing information and warnings about imminent natural
hazards.
Since 2011, the Meteorological Office has formally served as the State
Volcano Observatory. A multitude of people work at IMO on exciting
development and research projects related to weather and climate, glaciers,
water and ocean, crustal movements, volcanic eruptions, and the dispersion
of gas and ash clouds, as well as floods.

*Main tasks and responsibilities: *
â?¢ Applying different geodetic inversion techniques, utilizing various input
deformation data (GNSS and InSAR), to assess processes responsible for
observed ground deformation at volcanoes and determine the deformation
source parameters.
â?¢ Participation in long-term volcano monitoring in Iceland.
â?¢ Participation in response to volcanic eruptions and contributing to
findings beneficial to stakeholders.
â?¢ Development and dissemination of products for monitoring and research.
â?¢ Dissemination of information to various stakeholders, such as the public,
Civil Protection, aviation authorities, the energy industry, and the media.
â?¢ Participation in various projects, including hazard assessment and
research.

*Requirements: *
â?¢ PhD in geophysics, or a related field
â?¢ Expert knowledge of volcanic deformation and processes.
â?¢ Experience with both Analytical and 3D Finite Element Modeling of
volcanic deformation.
â?¢ Proficiency in programming.
â?¢ Good knowledge of Unix/Linux operating systems.
â?¢ Organizational skills and accuracy in work.
â?¢ Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work under pressure when
required (e.g. during volcanic unrest).
â?¢ Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
â?¢ Analytical skills and the ability to communicate results within the team
and to external parties.
â?¢ Good communication skills (speech and writing), preferably in both
English and Icelandic.

The values of the Meteorological Office are knowledge, reliability,
initiative, and collaboration. Recruitment at the institution is based on
these values. Salary is according to the current collective agreement of
the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs and the relevant trade union.
The position is full-time.
Applications are to be filled out at www.starfatorg.is

application must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae and a cover letter
explaining the reason for the application and providing evidence of
suitability for the position.

Jónsdóttir, Head of Department, kristinj@xxxxxxxx and Borgar var Axelsson,
HR Manager, borgar@xxxxxxxx . The application deadline is April 30th 2024.

   2. *Specialist in Volcanic Gas - Volcano monitoring*

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) is seeking a specialist in the
field of volcanic gas emissions and monitoring of volcanic gases in the
atmosphere. This is a full-time position within the department of volcanic
activity, earthquakes, and deformation, and the division of service and
research.
We are looking for an individual to participate in team work on volcano
monitoring and responses to eruptions and volcanic unrest, as well as to
enhance long-term surveillance of volcanoes in Iceland and participate in
hazard assessment and research projects. The Icelandic Meteorological
Office is a public institution responsible for monitoring natural hazards
nationwide and providing information and warnings about imminent natural
hazards. Since 2011, the Meteorological Office has formally served as the
State Volcano Observatory.

*Main tasks and responsibilities: *
â?¢ Participation in remote and direct gas measurements at various volcanoes
in Iceland.
â?¢ Interpretation of gas measurements.
â?¢ Presentation of gas measurement data used in manned twenty-four-hour
monitoring of natural hazards intended for early warning.
â?¢ Domestic and international collaboration in volcano monitoring.
â?¢ Dissemination of information to various stakeholders, such as civil
protection authorities, aviation authorities, the energy industry, and the
media.
â?¢ Participation in projects related to hazard assessment and research.

*Requirements: *
â?¢ At least a Masterâ??s degree in geochemistry, geophysics, or related
fields.
â?¢ Expert knowledge of volcanic gas and monitoring of volcanic hazards in
the athomsphere
â?¢ Substantial experience in gas data processing, presentation and
interpretation.
â?¢ Experience of gas measurements in the field
â?¢ Understanding of the physics of the Earth's atmosphere, particularly in
gas dispersion.
â?¢ Skills in human communication and ability to work independently and in
interdisciplinary teamwork.
â?¢ Organized and methodical work habits.
â?¢ Proficiency in spoken and written preferrably both in Icelandic and
English.
â?¢ Experience in numerical modeling is an advantage.
