Science
Center is looking to fill two important leadership positions that will
further clarify and implement the National Volcano Early Warning System
(NVEWS) and the National Volcano Information Service (NVIS). Both are GS-14
Supervisory Physical Scientist positions with possible duty stations in

*Deputy Volcano Science Center Director and Manager of the National Volcano
Early Warning System (NVEWS) Project*


*As a Supervisory Physical Scientist, Deputy Center Director, and Manager
of the National Volcano Early Warning System (NVEWS) Project within the
Volcano Science Center (VSC), some specific duties will include:*

   - As Deputy Center Director, the incumbent is a senior member of the VSC
   management team and fully represents the Center Director in all matters
   relating to the management and supervision of the Center including budget,
   personnel, and emergency response.
   - As NVEWS Project Manager, works in collaboration with VSC and Volcano
   Hazards Program leadership to develop and approve multi-year work plans and
   schedules to develop and support the projectâ??s national-scale plans to
   ensure that volcanoes are monitored at levels commensurate to their
   threats.
   - Exercises delegated authority to oversee planning, direction, and
   timely execution of the NVEWS program in coordination with
   scientists-in-charge, cooperating institutions, and observatory field
   engineering leads.
   - Provides high-level vision, guidance, and oversight regarding NVEWS
   activities across the VSC and with cooperating partners.
   - Plans and oversees the NVEWS budget; tracks progress and performance
   in achieving NVEWS goals; works with VSC and VHP leadership to ensure
   proper reporting.



*National Volcano Information Service (NVIS) Manager*



*As a Supervisory Physical Scientist and National Volcano Information
Service (NVIS) Project Manager within the Volcano Science Center, some of
your specific duties will include:*

   - Provides expert technical oversight of the NVIS on behalf of the
   Volcano Science Center; coordinates NVIS efforts across the VSC working
   closely with professional IT staff, computer scientists, VSC management,
   and subject matter experts to develop a modern suite of data services to
   facilitate research, hazard analysis and eruption response and improve data
   distribution to the community and stakeholders.
   - Plans and schedules NVIS activities to support observatory operations,
   interoperability, early warning, and data dissemination; adjusts staffing
   levels or procedures; decides, in consultation with technical experts and
   end users, methodologies to achieve objectives.
   - Analyzes benefits and costs of accomplishing work in-house versus
   contracting.
   - Plans and oversees the NVIS budget; tracks progress and performance;
   works with VSC leadership to ensure proper reporting.
   - Develops cooperative relationships with other USGS and external
   partners who can contribute to NVIS mission.
   - Serves as a senior technical advisor on volcano information services
   for the USGS and the USGS Natural Hazards Program mission area.


   - Responsible for oversight of 24x7 watch office function, once
   established, as part of NVEWS.
