Please join us for the â??U.S. Geological Surveyâ??s National Volcano Early
Warning System (NVEWS) â?? An Updateâ?? Townhall on *THURSDAY DECEMBER 14 @
1:00pm in Moscone West 2008 *

The U.S. and its territories contain 161 potentially active volcanoes. The
U.S. Geological Surveyâ??s Volcano Science Center (VSC) and its five volcano
observatories, along with partner agencies and universities, is responsible
for monitoring activity at the nationâ??s volcanoes and issuing early warning
of hazardous activities that pose a threat to people, communities, and
infrastructure. The National Volcano Early Warning System (NVEWS) was
conceived to support this mission and ensure that the nationâ??s volcanoes
are monitored at levels commensurate with their threat. As authorized in
2019 by 43 USC 31k, the complete NVEWS plan includes modernized and
expanded ground- and space-based monitoring networks, a 24/7 National
Volcano Watch office capacity, a National Volcano Information Service
(NVIS), an external grants program, and advisory committees.

The Townhall will feature updates from USGS Volcano Hazards Program and VSC
staff about ongoing efforts to modernize and expand volcano monitoring
networks, initial NVIS-related development projects, ongoing efforts to
increase interoperability across observatories, ongoing discussions about
how and when to implement an external grants program, and other
NVEWS-related topics. Anyone interested in learning more about NVEWS
and/or providing feedback to NVEWS managers is welcome and strongly
encouraged to attend.
