3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3 From: Meghann Decker <meghannd@xxxxxxxxxx> Announcing the 2024 Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV) International Training Course in Volcano Hazards Monitoring In the summer of 2024, the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, in cooperation with the USGS Volcano Disaster Assistance Program, will offer the International Training Course in Volcano Hazards Monitoring. The eight-week course will begin on Sunday, June 1, and end on Saturday, July 27, 2024. The course introduces a broad suite of volcano monitoring techniques rather than detailed training with just one. Topics of primary emphasis for the course will include volcano seismology, acquisition and analysis of geodetic data, methods of analysis and monitoring of gas geochemistry, interpretation of volcanic deposits and landforms, and response to and management of volcanic crises. The course is not geared towards academics but addresses hazard management through monitoring and analyzing volcanic unrest and working in a crisis response mode when unrest reaches the eruptive state. The course is intended for professionals and technicians working in volcano hazards management. The first six weeks will be in Hawaii, and the last two weeks will be at the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Washington. The latter two weeks will focus on stratigraphy and mapping at Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. The course costs $9,000 USD per person, including course fees, housing, and ground transportation. This price does not include food or airfare; participants must cover those costs individually. The U.S. Geological Surveyâ??s Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP), which generously supported some of the past CSAV participantsâ?? costs, will be able to provide support for some of our participants for the upcoming course. However, the VDAP resources are limited, and thus, if your institution is able to provide funding for you to attend the CSAV course, either course fees or airfare or both, there will be a greater likelihood of acceptance to the course. For 2024, to provide the best possible training, we will only accept a limited number of participants. The course will be conducted in English. We strongly encourage applicants to develop their fluency in English before attending the course to ensure maximum benefit from the training.
