PhD Position in Quantitative Volcanology at Stanford University

The Department of Geophysics seeks a creative individual for a fully-funded
PhD position working at the interface between volcanology, physics, and
applied mathematics. The project is funded by the National Science
Foundation.

Sometimes, the most valuable clues to understanding a complex natural
process emerge at the smallest of scales. When volcanoes erupt, they eject
small droplets of lava that immediately freeze, preserving tiny bubbles or
crystals that have witnessed eruptive processes
directly. Deciphering this testimony is not easy, partly because it is
confounded by the eruption and partly because existing models at the
macroscopic scale may not entail any testable predictions at the scale of
individual bubbles or crystals.

It is thus maybe not surprising that the National Academies of Sciences,
Engineering, and Medicine recently identified the development of
multi-scale models that capture critical processes and can be tested
against field data as one of the three grand challenges in modern
volcanology. In this position, you will make progress towards this goal by
developing customized mathematical models that advance our ability to
connect different scales and are testable against existing data.

Preferred Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be a friendly, intelligent, self-directed
individual who is excited about working on collaborative projects. A
passion for understanding volcanic processes is required and a strong
quantitative background in physics, applied mathematics, fluid mechanics,
mechanical engineering or a similar field would be useful. The position is
located in the Doerr School of Sustainability at Stanford University.

How to Apply:
All applications have to be submitted through the website:

Stanford University is an equal-opportunity employer and we are especially
eager to identify candidates with a genuine excitement for science and the
persistence to pursue tough challenges, who can enrich the existing
scientific debate with their unique point of view.
