To those interested,

This is a gentle reminder that we are organizing a special collection in
the Bulletin of Volcanology focused on the Mauna Loa 2022 eruption.

The journal webpage is here:

and you can read the announcement below.

If you are also interested in participating, please contact the guest
editors with a one-paragraph summary of the topic you would like to cover,
a working title, and a tentative author list by November 1, 2023.

Papers will be due in April 2024.

Please circulate widely among your peers, and let me know if you have any
questions.

Cheers,

Drew (for the guest editors)

*Call for Papers: Mauna Loa 2022 â?? Unrest, Eruption, and Outreach at the
Worldâ??s Largest Volcano*

The largest ocean island volcano in the world, Mauna Loa (Hawaiâ??i), erupted
in November 2022 after a 38-year repose and decades of unrest, threatening
local populations and infrastructure. This eruption demonstrated the unique
challenges that ocean island volcanoes represent: from monitoring of the
magma source through hazard assessment of lava flow emplacement to
community outreach and engagement. In this special collection we focus on
how such challenges may be overcome to answer primary questions: What
characteristics of volcanic unrest signal a run-up to eruption? When and
where will the eruption begin? How much material will be erupted and what
influences the volume and rate of effusion? How can lava flow and other
hazards be forecast during eruptions? How can information be easily and
reliably relayed to partners and the general public? How can geologic,
petrologic, and chemical data inform our response efforts, as well as
providing constraints on what is occurring in the plumbing system?
This special issue welcomes *research articles, review papers, perspectives
articles and data reports or other short report papers on multidisciplinary
studies of Mauna Loa investigating magma storage and ascent, summit and
rift zone dynamics, and fissure and lava flow processes and hazard
assessments.

Large data sets can be included with the articles as supplementary
information (SI). We encourage monitoring data sets attached to the reports
to be archived in WOVOdat (wovodat.org

as being part of a global initiative to build the comprehensive global
database on volcanic unrest and promoting FAIR data principles. Spreadsheet
templates in the WOVOdat format will be provided. These will be included as
SI, provided a DOI and linked to wovodat.org
