*Hazard Assessment for Latin American Volcanoes: Innovations in Practice
and Opportunities for Knowledge Transfer*
The aim of this session is to share knowledge and compare and contrast
different approaches to hazard assessment for Latin American volcanoes. We
welcome contributions that span a range of approaches (e.g.
inventory-based, scenario-based, probabilistic) and timescales (e.g.
short-term emergency response, long-term planning). These will help
highlight specific data requirements and examples of different methods that
have been successfully applied to Latin American volcanoes, such as data
collection during the eruption and/or mapping of eruptive products,
Geographic Information System analyses, application of physics-based or
statistical models (e.g. event trees), and lessons learned from their
application. We also welcome contributions that provide insight into the
relationship between volcanic hazard assessment and operational risk
management, local, regional and national risk management and governance,
and examples of the combination of established or innovative scientific
approaches to hazard assessment with community or indigenous knowledges for
both enhancement of hazard knowledge and risk mitigation planning.

The session will include a group discussion that aims to surface the
following issues: What are the challenges of making volcanic hazard
assessments in Latin America? What opportunities are there for knowledge
and data exchange (e.g. via analogues volcanoes) across Latin America, and
with other volcanic regions, globally? How can knowledge and experiences be
most efficiently shared between operational (e.g. volcano observatories)
and academic institutions?
