2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: Elisabeth Gallant <egallant@xxxxxxxxxx> Aloha Friends and Colleagues, Are you an aficionado of ocean islands, their eruptions, and unrest? My fellow conveners and I invite you to submit an abstract to our AGU 2023 session, V022 - Ocean Island Volcanoes: From Quiescence through Eruption ( https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm23/prelim.cgi/Session/186633__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!dLXpeTXKvRu4nteK3XNU8RHZ1vuq2w99RRH34aBCtsuPSarKUQ2ap0eK3ZG6gqkJhLcNdMrFBy8oPsBz$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm23/prelim.cgi/Session/186633__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!bdd1A5Z5M_nNNoRRUeePAuj2gxWxbroIJCbg-8mrnULerWZLuxrCmYtMQe0QA2CeMXd_O-T0-cSftbTQ7-c$>). The AGU abstract deadline is Wednesday, 2 August 2023 at 23:59 EDT/03:59 +1 GMT. Please reach out to any of the conveners if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco and online! -Lis Gallant (UH Hilo) on behalf of conveners Ninfa Bennington (USGS HVO), Kendra Lynn (USGS HVO), Gro Pedersen (U. Iceland), and Christelle Wauthier (Penn State) The largest ocean island volcano in the world, Mauna Loa (Hawaii), erupted in November 2022 after a 38-year repose and decades of unrest, threatening local populations and infrastructure. This eruption demonstrated the unique challenges that ocean island volcanoes represent from monitoring of the magma source through hazard assessment of lava flow emplacement. How can such challenges be overcome to answer primary questions: What characteristics of volcanic unrest signal a run-up to eruption? When and where will the eruption begin? How much material will be erupted and what influences the volume and rate of effusion? How can lava flow and other hazards be forecast during eruptions? In this session, we welcome multidisciplinary studies of ocean island volcanoes investigating magma storage, transport, and ascent; summit and rift zone dynamics; and fissure and lava flow processes and hazard assessment. 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 ------------------------------
