However, modernizing curricula can be challenging on a departmental level, as student numbers are falling in many subdisciplines and quantitative skills are not always emphasized. Moreover, the continued gaps in diversity in geosciences and a lack of perceived connection between quantitative skills and knowledge needed for jobs exacerbate these issues. Existing training networks address aspects of these challenges, but those education and career pathways are neither robust nor well-coordinated.
