Hello colleagues,

Weâ??d like to draw your attention to a 2023 AGU Fall Meeting session on
â??*Quantitative Skills Training
and Educational Pathways in Solid Earth Geophysics*.â?? We encourage you to
submit to this session â?? more information below.

Thank you so much!

*Session ID:* 191767
*Session Title:* ED033. Quantitative Skills Training and Educational
Pathways in Solid Earth Geophysics
*Section:* Education

*Session Details:* https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm23/prelim.cgi/Session/191767__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!cMjFa5A6AN_uwovWPywDJaYsTYB6XX_A2NrSeoC3ee8KuX_AjDeQ8lTqVf_SeBAxG_rrR-WCG_bkcwMK$

*Conveners: *Cathy Manduca (Carleton College), Cindy Ebinger (Tulane
University), Mark Behn (Boston College), Deb Glickson (National Academies
of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine)

*Session Description:* A diverse, interdisciplinary, quantitatively
literate workforce is crucial to solve Earth science problems at the core
of current and future scientific and societally relevant problems, such as
natural hazards, national security, climate change, and the energy
transition. However, modernizing curricula can be challenging on a
departmental level, as student numbers are falling in many subdisciplines
and quantitative skills are not always emphasized. Moreover, the continued
gaps in diversity in geosciences and a lack of perceived connection between
quantitative skills and knowledge needed for jobs exacerbate these issues.
Existing training networks address aspects of these challenges, but those
education and career pathways are neither robust nor well-coordinated. This
session will discuss novel approaches and lessons learned to strengthen
quantitative training, enhance and diversify pathways for entry, and
provide best practices and collective impact-oriented solution strategies
for a solid Earth geophysics workforce of the future.
