*Institut national de la recherche scientifique* (INRS), a research
university based in Quebec City, Canada, is looking for a postdoctoral
fellow. The project is called â??*Geochemical and petrogenetic evolution of
the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt, Canada*â??.

Seven subalkaline volcanic assemblages have been distinguished in the
Abitibi greenstone belt and existing work has allowed over 12 000
geochemical analyses including trace elements to be compiled. So far we
have interpreted the geochemistry and petrology of some, but not all, the
seven assemblages. The new postdoc will focus on the remaining assemblages,
but also take the petrogenetic modelling further for all assemblages. At
the end, there will be a complete synthesis of the geochemistry and
petrology of volcanic rocks in the Abitibi.

The first reason for doing this is to get a better understanding of how
Archean greenstone belts are assembled. The second is that some of the
assemblages contain abundant volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits
(Cu-Zn-Au-Ag), whereas other assemblages are VMS-poor, and we want to
understand why. So we are comparing the geochemical signature and
petrogenetic history of VMS-endowed versus VMS-depleted assemblages. The
research at INRS is part of a multi-university effort called â??Crust-Mantle
Processes Responsible for VMS Endowment during the evolution of Archean
Greenstone Beltsâ??, which is a component of the Metal Earth program (

Funding is secure for two years with the option of a one-year extension,
depending on performance and availability of extra funds. The project will
start as soon as the best candidate has been selected.

The ideal candidate will have a recent PhD in geology/earth sciences with a
significant experience in igneous geochemistry. This person will have
experience with (1) handling large geochemical databases in software like
ioGAS and ArcGIS; (2) multivariate statistics; (3) petrological modelling
in specialized software (magma fractionation, magma mixing, crustal
contaminationâ?¦). Scientific writing skills are essential and so is a
passion for science and discovery. Motivated candidates should immediately
submit their resume, a cover letter, and the names and complete coordinates
of three referees to Pierre-Simon Ross at pierre-simon.ross@xxxxxxx.

INRS is strongly committed to equity, diversity and inclusion within its
community. All qualified candidates, including members of visible
minorities, women, Aboriginal persons, members of sexual minorities and
persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
