The department hosts many state-of-the-art facilities, and has large research groups, allowing for a diverse, flexible advising and top research conditions. We are looking for highly motivated PhD students, interested in studying the physics and/or chemistry of magma reservoirs in the Earthâ??s crust, focusing on the magmatic evolution in transcrustal columns, as well as the influence of tectonic settings on eruptive styles and compositional ranges at volcanoes. The PhD projects, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, will be integrated in the group of Prof. Olivier Bachmann, in collaboration with colleagues in around the world. The projects will include a combination of fieldwork, geochemical analyses of rock, mineral, melt, and gas samples with data interpretation, potential experimental work, and numerical modelling. The length of the appointment will be for 4 years, starting as soon as possible. Candidates should hold a MSc degree with a strong background in geochemistry, petrology, and physics of magmas, skills in numerical modeling, and a taste for fieldwork.
