2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: "Van Eaton, Alexa R" <avaneaton@xxxxxxxx> Announcing the Jack Kleinman Memorial Fund for Volcano Research â?? deadline extended to May 1, 2023 The Community Foundation for Southwest Washington, in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), invites applications for the 2023 Jack Kleinman Grant: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.cfsww.org/funds/jack-kleinman-memorial-fund-for-volcano-research-expendable/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!eaSTVkMElP0TUR33N-5U23SgFS_xT9jUTocMN3h_ppG6gbuOuJfa08faEfaxv7topjT6v3LL9D4PKHm-$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.cfsww.org/funds/jack-kleinman-memorial-fund-for-volcano-research-expendable/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!dcH0957Y3C3Idio104Zf-Lz_b49rD9C4sKSP7C4Hu7rQxyw3_mVeNlZpr1lZTa-CltLodYQn4-azZZ1nXqs$> The program is intended to perpetuate and memorialize the attributes embodied by Jack Kleinman, a USGS employee who died in a kayaking accident in 1994, to promote collaborative volcanology projects among USGS and university researchers, and to further the education and outreach mission of the USGS. Awards up to $5,000 are available to undergraduates and graduate students conducting research in volcanology. Applicants do not need to be U.S. citizens, but eligible topics focus on U.S. volcanoes, preferably in the Cascade Range, Aleutian Arc, Hawaii, Yellowstone, or Long Valley. The funds are intended to defray the costs of conducting field-based studies, including travel to the field area, living expenses while in the field, supplies, or analytical services. Consideration in the selection of grant recipients will be given to the characteristics that best defined Jack Kleinman: exuberance, integrity, reliability, loyalty, and the abilities to relish challenge, inspire enthusiasm in others, and delight in the natural world. An example of the scope of work envisioned is a project involving geologic, geochemical, or geophysical investigation with a strong emphasis on fieldwork. Cooperation with a staff member at one of the USGS volcano observatories is given considerable weight in the selection process. Successful applicants are encouraged to present their results as part of the USGS Kleinman Seminar Series and to publish their work as appropriate. Applications should be submitted by May 1, 2023 and include: (1) A completed application template, available here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=1jQjUY3wJgYO28UJdHAMONlq_eoYVmfNm__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!eaSTVkMElP0TUR33N-5U23SgFS_xT9jUTocMN3h_ppG6gbuOuJfa08faEfaxv7topjT6v3LL9Frwo0HH$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=1jQjUY3wJgYO28UJdHAMONlq_eoYVmfNm__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!dcH0957Y3C3Idio104Zf-Lz_b49rD9C4sKSP7C4Hu7rQxyw3_mVeNlZpr1lZTa-CltLodYQn4-azMuI-NfU$>and (2) two letters of recommendation, including at least one from a current academic adviser or instructor (sent directly to the email address below by May 1, 2023).
