Description:

The Department of Geology at the University of Hawaii at Hilo invites
applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor
level in any area of volcanology. The department seeks applicants who will
spearhead undergraduate instruction and research in volcanology.

The successful candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to teaching and
research at the undergraduate level, including working with students from a
variety of backgrounds and those from traditionally underrepresented
groups. The ideal applicant is a collaborative investigator who will
develop an integrated field- and laboratory-based research program that
involves undergraduate students. Further, the ideal applicant will take
advantage of UH-Hiloâ??s location on Hawai`i Island and the departmentâ??s
collaborative relationship with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO)
and Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV).

The UH-Hilo geology department offers bachelorâ??s degrees in geology,
specializing in volcanology and environmental geology. The Department of
Geology houses teaching laboratories in petrology and a geoarchaeology lab
with a ThermoNoran Quantâ??X EDXRF; faculty also have access to facilities
elsewhere on campus, including an SEM and ICP housed in the UH-Hilo
Analytical Laboratory, the UH-Hilo Spatial Data and Analysis Laboratory,
and potentially facilities and equipment housed at HVO.  More information

Duties and Responsibilities

   1. Teach general education and upper-division geology classes; advise
   students.
   2. Engage in research or equivalent scholarship.
   3. Perform service to the university, community, and/or profession.
   4. Teaching duties include introductory geology courses, mineralogy,
   petrology, and volcanology. (UH-Hilo requires teaching the equivalent of
   three courses per semester, with the remainder of the workload devoted to
   scholarly activity and service

 Minimum Qualifications:

   1. Earned doctorate in geology or related field at time of application.
   2. Prior experience in undergraduate instruction in English.
   3. Training or professional experience in volcanology.
   4. Active research in the area of volcanology as evidenced by
   peer-reviewed publication within the last five years.
   5. High-quality communication skills as demonstrated by articulate cover
   letter and curriculum vitae that details how the candidate meets the
   minimum and desired qualifications.

   Desirable Qualifications
   6. Experience as lead instructor in undergraduate geology or earth
   science course.
   7. Demonstrated record of high-quality in undergraduate instruction.
   8. Evidence of the ability to teach mineralogy, igneous/metamorphic
   petrology, or volcanology.
   9. Experience or background in GIS or Remote Sensing
   10. Experience working with a diverse student body or integrating
   perspectives of indigenous peoples into science teaching.
   11. Experience in recruitment and retention of students.
   12. Experience or interest in being an advisor or mentor for
   undergraduate student research.
   13. Active research program that involves collaborative activities
