There is an opportunity for a new Ph.D. student in the Department of Geology, University at Buffalo, to focus on physical volcanology of young basaltic volcanoes in southwestern Utah. This NSF-sponsored research is a collaboration between Greg Valentine (UB), Liz Widom (Miami Univ. Ohio), and USGS researchers and is aimed at understanding processes of magma source through eruption in this region that straddles the Basin and Range - Colorado Plateau transition. The studentship will involve detailed, field-based physical volcanological studies of selected volcanoes, time at Cascades Volcano Observatory working with USGS collaborators on textural and other analyses of samples, and close collaboration with the Miami Univ.-based group focusing on petrogenesis. The position is available for a start in Spring or Fall 2023; preference will be given to students who have completed a Master's degree.
