The microprobe lab is a cornerstone of the instrumental array at SOEST and
has facilitated research and education in the Pacific for over 30 years.
The lab serves the state of Hawaiʻi and advances frontiers in many areas
where precise characterization of materials is essential, including
volcanology, mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry and planetary sciences.
The incumbent joins a vibrant group of researchers applying innovative
analytical methods to solving geological problems and will be encouraged to
broaden the reach of the laboratoryâ??s user group to other disciplines.


The position is to be filled at the Assistant level with salary competitive
and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Duties include
maintaining the JEOL JXA-8500F field-emission gun electron microprobe with
EDS (and related support equipment) at high performance levels, including
routine maintenance and troubleshooting; managing all aspects of the
laboratory including recharge account and purchasing supplies; annually
teaching a graduate level course in Electron Microprobe Analysis; training
new users; supervising the lab use by others; and participating in research
projects that utilize this microprobe; seeking extramural funding, either
independently or in collaboration with other scientists.

Minimum qualifications include a Masterâ??s degree in Geoscience or related
fields and experience in the management and maintenance of an electron
microprobe.

The position is funded at a level of 75% (50% by State-University funds,
25% by SOEST College funds), and is subject to satisfactory performance.
The incumbent may obtain 25% of their annual salary via extramural sources
to augment the 75% State-University and SOEST support up to 100% FTE (full
time equivalent).
