The speaker will be *John BradySmith College, Northampton, MA, USA* *Kinetic processes began to be studied, through experimental studies, quantitative models, and observations on natural rocks, in the 1960's and experienced a boom in the 1970's and early 80's through a variety of studies. This was the combined result of the availability of analytical tools that allowed concentration profiles to be measured with high spatial resolution (electron microprobe, transmission electron microscope), availability of computers, and a general interest in quantification. John was one of the participants in the studies at that time and made some of the pioneering contributions. Some of the ideas are beginning to be revived now, partly because a new generation of analytical and computation tools have become available. We have requested John to provide us a perspective on those early studies, based on his experience.
