We are excited to advertise a NSF-funded MS project in
petrology/geochemistry at Western Washington University (WWU) in Bellingham
Washington starting in August/September 2022: *Phenocryst or not? Using a
stratovolcano's crystal cargo to explore crustal-scale crustal-scale
magmatic systems, Koma Kulshan (Mt. Baker), Northern Cascade Arc*

The student(s) will be funded in their first year by a teaching
assistantship and in their summers and second year by a research
assistantship. The project will involve field sampling at Koma Kulshan
(~2-hour drive from the WWU campus) and geochemical analyses of mineral
phases in lava flows and tephras (SEM/E-probe, LA-ICP-MS for trace
elements, and LA-MC-ICP-MS for isotopes). The goal is to determine depth of
magma/mush storage conditions and timescales of magmatic/eruptive
processes. The applicant will also be expected to be involved in a paid
summer institute on Koma Kulshan involving undergraduates new to STEM.

The timeline for applications is very short â?? students must apply by
January 15, 2022, but letters of recommendation can be received a bit
later. If interested, contact Dr. Susan DeBari (debari@xxxxxxx) to learn
more and apply here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.applyweb__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!K9LwtY94zhqwpeeBpuwiVj0JrmSRrwbiwXk-pJhlWXLBBC9aN0abt1DR2X7_tvI$ .

The ideal candidate will have had some undergraduate research experience in
petrology or geochemistry and have a desire to learn the analytical
techniques described above from our amazing technical support staff.
Candidates for the MS degree position must have a BS/BA degree in Geology
with classic undergraduate training (optical mineralogy, petrology, etc.).
We especially welcome students from minoritized groups (Black, Latinx,
Indigenous and/or LGBTQ+) to apply for this position.

WWU has a vibrant MS research program (~30 students) and a large
undergraduate geology program (~150 students). Bellingham is a spectacular
community nestled between the ocean and the Cascade mountains (
