Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to this 2022 Goldschmidt session
that was organized to honor Fred Frey. See below for details on the session.
Please consider submitting an abstract for this session, especially if
you worked with Fred or if you were influenced by his work.

The meeting will be held in sunny Honolulu, Hawaii. Fred worked
extensively on the origin and evolution of Hawaiian basalts.

Best regards,

Shichun Huang, Kirsten Nicolaysen, Mike Rhodes, and Mike Garcia

5b - Geochemical and isotopic compositions of volcanic magmas and their
sources: A tribute to Frederick A. Frey
Abstract Submission Deadline: March 1, 2022
Fred Frey passed away on September 13th, 2021 after a long battle with
Parkinsonâ??s Disease. This session honors his contributions to modern
geochemistry, and in particular to his over 50 yearâ??s extensive
application of geochemistry to understand the magmatic processes that
produce the Earthâ??s volcanoes. Fred was instrumental, along with others,
in defining and reshaping the now-mature sub-discipline of trace element
geochemistry. His pioneering work using neutron activation analysis for
accurate and precise determination of trace element compositions in
rocks, together with isotope geochemistry, field geology and petrology,
significantly improved our understanding of the roles of source, partial
melting, and magmatic differentiation and evolution leading to volcanism
at mid-ocean ridges, converging boundaries, and intra-plate settings.
These processes are important for differentiating the Earth, modifying
the Earthâ??s surface, and affecting the environment. Fred was a
practitioner of diversity and inclusivity before it became the current
emphasis, as evidenced by his many students from groups under
represented in STEM, many of whom have gone on to highly successful
careers in geology. Fred was a longstanding member and fellow of the
Geochemical Society, President of the Volcanology, Geochemistry and
Petrology Section of the American Geophysical Union, and an Associate
Editor of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta for over 20 years. In this
session, we invite contributions that use geochemical, isotopic,
petrologic and field approaches to understand the volcanoes from all
tectonic environments.
