The project has particular relevance to the long-range dispersion of ash particles from volcanic plumes which is sensitive to the size and density of the particles both of which can be altered by aggregation. A key part of the project will be to develop predictive models of aggregation in turbulent flows based on the Smoluchowski equation (also known as the population balance or stochastic collection/coalescence equation) and direct numerical simulation of turbulence.
