2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: "Ball, Jessica L" <jlball@xxxxxxxx> Dear colleagues and students, The USGS Volcano Hazard Program is happy to offer a Mendenhall Postdoctoral Opportunity titled *"Exploring user needs and community engagement for next-generational volcano products, maps, and tools" (#20-16).* ( https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.usgs.gov/centers/mendenhall/20-16-exploring-user-needs-and-community-engagement-next-generational-volcano__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!O4QNM3jSJzVmn7rWKAGWBPWiS3Z3RmsgM3VmCgNKyYzWmmD5UhFtqzEO9XkoT94$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.usgs.gov/centers/mendenhall/20-16-exploring-user-needs-and-community-engagement-next-generational-volcano__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!MzlV5yKA2oQ-MbWhytebia1IFSmayfWWliegC0f-ZmCRGcgqagVXDmyZVsiYHJrUQSc$> ) This Mendenhall is unique in that we are seeking candidates with strong social science expertise in order to support the Next Generation Volcano Hazard Assessment project (NGVHA). This cross-volcano-observatory initiative encompasses numerous parallel research efforts focused on establishing a model for producing consistent and comprehensive volcanic hazards assessments for high-priority U.S. volcanoes. The ideal candidate will apply social science expertise to research and evaluations aimed at making USGS volcano hazard products, communication, and other services more accessible, just, inclusive, equitable, useful, and usable for the diverse communities and groups that we serve. We invite creative proposals that will enhance USGSâ??s ability to meet its obligations to â??[E]nhance public safety and minimize social and economic disruption from eruptionsâ?¦â?? for all. Therefore, in addition to addressing topical research themes outlined in the announcement, proposals must clearly articulate a plan for meaningful, sincere, and equitable service to groups that have been made vulnerable through practices such as historically discriminatory policies and geographic isolation, for example Sovereign Tribal Nations, small and remote population centers, lower income urban area residents, and BIPOC communities. The successful candidate may be stationed at *any* of the USGS's physical volcano observatories in Vancouver, Washington; Anchorage, Alaska; Mountain View, California; or Hilo, Hawaii. *IMPORTANT NOTE:* Applicants must meet the qualifications for one of the following: Research Social Scientist or Research Sociologist ( https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.usgs.gov/centers/mendenhall/basic-qualification-requirements-0*res_socsci__;Iw!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!O4QNM3jSJzVmn7rWKAGWBPWiS3Z3RmsgM3VmCgNKyYzWmmD5UhFtqzEOrUNjlyg$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.usgs.gov/centers/mendenhall/basic-qualification-requirements-0*res_socsci__;Iw!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!MzlV5yKA2oQ-MbWhytebia1IFSmayfWWliegC0f-ZmCRGcgqagVXDmyZVsiYu2iGXN0$> ). *Applications close 1/6/2022.* Please contact Jessica Ball (jlball@xxxxxxxx) with any questions; we also encourage you to pass this announcement on to interdisciplinary colleagues and students. 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 ------------------------------
