2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: Joan Marti Molist <joanmartimolist@xxxxxxxxx> *THIRD CIRCULAR* *International Workshop 10th anniversary of Tagoro submarine eruption at El Hierro Island (October 2011)* *El Hierro, Canary Islands, 7-11 October 2021* https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://elhierroworkshop.geo3bcn.csic.es/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!N_c6LqwrVT38AsSG5skAkHETRbwTqhpgL2pkPYfrdgYMwroNYGXxTamnJxZIpGs$ < https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://elhierroworkshop.geo3bcn.csic.es/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!KWWFD753fh2Dt0v0yBsr1JyxHm6sQ6ox6KsX8B-x4UieJmGcD0fULIfT0TDiy7Y$ > *Motivation* On October 10, 2011, after more than 10000 earthquakes were located in a 3-month period of unrest, a volcanic tremor was registered south of El Hierro, suggesting the beginning of a submarine eruption. The new volcano, later named Tagoro, was located 1.8 km off the southern coast of the island and presented a south-westward lava flow. After March 2012, once the eruptive stage was over, Tagoro entered into an active hydrothermal phase involving the release of an important amount of heat, gases, and metals to the water column. Ten years later, Tagoro submarine volcano is still active, producing significant physical-chemical and biological perturbation over one of the richest marine ecosystems in Europe, Mar de Las Calmas, and there is a good number of questions that have still not been properly answered: How the magmatic system prepared for the eruption?, which were the geodynamic constraints of the eruption?, how magma interacted with the crust?, why magma migrated so long during the unrest phase?, was the unrest phase correctly interpreted?, were the eruption phases properly identified?, how the marine ecosystem of El Hierro Island is adapting to these extreme physical-chemical anomalies?, is this new marine ecosystem significantly different from its surroundings?, has this extreme ambient generate new kind of habitats?, moreover, was the crisis well managed?, was local population aware of what was happening?, was communication during crisis correct?, etc. This has been the last eruption in the Canary Islands, and occurred forty years after another eruption (TeneguÃa eruption) that occurred on La Palma, thus indicating that volcanism in the Canarian region is still alive and may return at any moment. In order to examine what we learned and what still remains to be learned from this last Canarian eruption, we invite you to participate to this international workshop, which is organised with the aim to offer a forum of discussion on Tagoro submarine eruption ten years after. The workshop will be open to all interested scientists, seeking for the exchange of knowledge and views on what they learned from Tagoro eruption and how this influenced their appreciation on volcanic activity and its potential impact on local society and environment. Policy makers, decision makers, media, and other actors involved in El Hierro crisis are also invited to participate. Contributions on what we knew and what we learned from Tagoro submarine eruption and, in particular, on: 1) El Hierro magmatic system, 2) Eruption preparation, dynamics and hazards, 3) Environmental impacts of Tagoro submarine eruption over marine ecosystem, and 4) Crisis management during Tagoro submarine eruption, will be more than welcome. *Organisers:* Joan MartÃ, Pablo González, Vicente Soler (CSIC) Inés Galindo (IGME-CSIC) Maria José Blanco, Carmen López (IGN) Eugenio Fraile (IEO-CSIC) Ramon Casillas (ULL) Laura Becerrill (SERNAGEOMIN) *Sponsors* Interdisciplinar Thematic Platform Volcanism and Society ( https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.ptivolcan.es__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!N_c6LqwrVT38AsSG5skAkHETRbwTqhpgL2pkPYfrdgYMwroNYGXxTamnQipQogE$ < https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.ptivolcan.es__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!KWWFD753fh2Dt0v0yBsr1JyxHm6sQ6ox6KsX8B-x4UieJmGcD0fULIfTjdH-9_U$ >), CSIC IGME-CSIC. IEO-CSIC, IGN Cabildo de El Hierro/ El Hierro UNESCO Global Geopark IAVCEI Cátedra Cultural Telesforo Bravo, La Laguna University, Spain *Structure of the workshop* The main aim of the workshop is to offer an open, interdisciplinary, and cross-boundary forum of discussion on the main aspects related to the 2011-2012 Tagoro submarine eruption at the El Hierro Island: El Hierro magmatic system, eruption preparation and dynamics, environmental impacts of the eruption, and crisis management. According to this, the workshop will include four main scientific sessions, each one addressing one of the main goals. Each session will include introductory oral presentations (invited keynotes), posters examination, and a general discussion. We want to give emphasis to poster presentations and discussion forums rather than to short talks. A final general discussion session will be placed at the end of the meeting in order to summarise and discuss the main conclusions reached in each particular session, which will be collected and presented by their respective conveners. This final discussion will also help us to summarise the main conclusions of the meeting. *Number of participants* The workshop is restricted to 60 participants. Preference is provided to those who made a preregistration and then registration will proceed on a first come basis until completing all available places. *Registration fee* A registration fee of 150 euros is requested to each participant. It will include documentation, opening ice-breaker, farewell dinner, and transportation and lunch pack during the excursion. *Venue* The workshop will be held at the Parador de El Hierro, where reservation of several rooms, including accommodation and full board, has been made to allocate all the participants combining double and single rooms (only a few are available). *Program* *Thursday, October 7, 2021* Arrival and accommodation at the Parador de El Hierro. 18h30 Opening and welcome (Cabildo de El Hierro) 19h00 Introduction to the geology of El Hierro UNESCO Global Geopark, by Ramón Casillas (El Hierro UGG coordinator, Spain) 19h45 Ice-breaker *Friday, October 8, 2021* *09h00- 13h00 Scientific session: El Hierro magmatic system* 09h00-09h30: A brief summary on El Hierro eruption, by Joan Martà (GEO3BCN, CSIC, Spain) 09h30-10h00: A general overview on El Hierro magmatic systems, by Laura Becerril (SERNAGEOMIN, Chile) and Inés Galindo (IGME-CSIC, Spain) 10h00-10h30: Discussion on the two presentations 10h30-11h00: Coffee break 11h00-12h00: General discussion on El Hierro magmatic systems and related aspects 12h00-13h00: Posters session 13h00-15h00 Lunch and poster session *15h00-19h00 Scientific session: Eruption preparation, dynamics and hazards* 15h00-15h30: Volcano monitoring during unrest and El Hierro eruption, by Carmen López (IGN, Spain) 15h00-16h00: The Holuhraun eruption 2014 (Iceland): another well monitored example of lateral magma migration, by Armann Hoskuldsson (University of Iceland, Iceland) 16h00-16h30: Discussion on the two presentations 16h30-17h00: Coffee break 17h00-18h00: General discussion on El Hierro volcano monitoring pre-, during, and after the eruption and related aspects 18h00-19h00: Posters session 20h30 Dinner *Saturday, October 9, 2021* *09h00- 13h00 Scientific session: Environmental impacts of Tagoro submarine eruption over marine ecosystem* 09h00-09h30: A general overview of Tagoro submarine eruption impact over El Hierro Island marine ecosystem, Eugenio Fraile (IEO-CSIC, Spain) 09h30-10h00: Hydrothermal venting after El Hierro eruption, invited speaker (to be decided) 10h00-10h30: Discussion on the two presentations 10h30-11h00: Coffee break 11h00-12h00: General discussion on El Hierro environmental impacts and hydrothermal activity, and related aspects 12h00-13h00: Posters session 13h00-14h30 Lunch and poster session *14h30-17h30 Scientific session: Crisis management* 14h30-15h00: Management of El Hierro crisis, by MarÃa José Blanco (IGN, Spain) 15h00-15h30: Communication during El Hierro crisis, by Néstor Padrón (Cabildo de El Hierro, Spain) 15h30-16h00: Discussion on the two presentations 16h00-16h30: Coffee break and poster session 16h30-17h15: General discussion on risk perception, management and communication during El Hierro crisis and related aspects 17:30 Field excursion to El Golfo valley, led by Inés Galindo and Isabel Montoya (IGME-CSIC, Spain). 19h00 Wine testing and dinner at Casa del Aguardiente, El Golfo *Sunday, October 10, 2021* *08h30-19h00.
