2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: Allan Lerner <lerner.allan@xxxxxxxxx> Dear friends and colleagues, We invite abstract submissions for a session on coupled petrologic and surface degassing measurements of volatiles in volcanic systems at this yearâ??s AGU meeting. Note that the meeting will have a hybrid format, with both virtual and in-person (in New Orleans, LA) portions. This specific session will be a *virtual-only *session to allow maximal flexibility and participation by our international community. Session details are below. **V005 - Connecting the Deep and Surficial Dots: Linking Petrology and Gas Measurements to Constrain Volatile Behavior in Volcanic Systems* *(session link here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm21/prelim.cgi/Session/120065__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!Ksei9OpE1bzEFQoypQ0UtsOc-mdtG4olPy2nllJYIO2NdULQUBYm3W6x2lyYy8Y$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm21/prelim.cgi/Session/120065__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!LmgbmCl_7tiPjkBnx3-Am81oqzmIXeZTolyCubWd6-5VIcJSreDh0nnHiBeskwc$> ) Volatiles play a critical role in the generation, evolution, and eruptive style of magmas. Information about the behavior of volatiles in the subsurface can be gleaned from laboratory experiments and modeling as well as petrologic and textural examination of minerals, vesicles, melt inclusions, and fluid inclusions in erupted products. During both eruptive and quiescent periods, outgassing at the surface is often assessed using a combination of direct gas sampling, in situ sensors, and remote spectroscopic methods. Independently, each of these techniques can provide important insights into volatile behavior. However, integrating petrologic methods and surficial gas measurements will promote an improved, more holistic understanding of volatile dynamics throughout volcanic systems. We seek contributions that combine a variety of techniques for evaluating the behavior of volatiles during magma ascent, degassing, and outgassing/eruption. We particularly encourage contributions that leverage both petrologic and surface gas measurements to reconstruct volatile behavior. Invited speakers: *Yves Moussallam* (Columbia University - LDEO) *Swetha Venugopal* (Cornell University) Reminder that the abstract submission deadline is *August 4th*. We look forward to your contributions in making this an informative and lively session! Sincerely, your conveners: Allan Lerner (University of Oregon) Tricia Nadeau (U.S. Geological Survey) Emma Liu (University College London) Syegi Kunrat (Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation) 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 ------------------------------
