*The EUROVOLC Summer School: Eruptive processes, observations and
responses *

The school will take place as a remote/virtual course over the period 20-29
September 2021. It will include about 30 hours of contact time over the
10-day period.

The school is organized by the University of Iceland (Nordic Volcanological
Center, Institute of Earth Sciences), the Icelandic Met Office, is a part
of the EU-funded project EUROVOLC (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://eruovolc.eu__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!J4n4Sw1zq4_Sex3mFaiAQ6UcZW8siVb5Zh_xtQs-sxy4dD98qLnEZi-tNECfblE$

and supported by EPOS and Nordforsk.

*Target group:* Young scientists at PhD and postdoc level. The
participants will be selected on the basis of the relevance of the course
for their current research activities.

*Program description:* The emphasis will be on monitoring of active
eruptions, how the various methods, tools and models are applied to assess
eruption source parameters, characteristics of both effusive and explosive
eruptions and the various hazards. Emphasis will be placed on the variety
of environmental settings and their influence on both monitoring methods
and hazards, including lessons from the eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull 2010,
Grímsvötn 2011, Holuhraun-Bárdarbunga 2014-15 and the presently ongoing
eruption in the Reykjanes Peninsula (2021). Due to the present
difficulties with travel due to Covid-19, the school will be in remote
format, with no actual travelling involved. This calls for a changed setup
of on-line lectures, purpose-made demonstration videos, and discussion
groups. Active participation of all students is ensured through individual
presentations. It is expected that participation will require attendance
for about four hours a day for 7 days.

A guided tour to the eruption site on Reykjanes Peninsula will be arranged
for participants that can travel and come to Iceland in the first week
after the school.

Information on registration etc. can be found at: *https//eurovolc.eu

The deadline for applications is August 20.

There are no registration fees. However, registration is mandatory and
only those registered can take part.
