Hello everyone,

If you, your students, or your colleagues want to share any new research
regarding lightning simulation and experimentation, please see a session
that we are convening for the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting. The
conference will be hybrid, so if you cannot attend in person (New Orleans
December 13-17) you can do so virtually.

AE004 - Lightning in a Bottle: Advances in the Experimental Generation of
Electrical Discharges

Lightning occurs on Earth and other planets in a range of dynamic
environments (thunderstorms, volcanic/wildfire ash plumes) where
atmospheric conditions and multi-phase microphysical interactions may vary
substantially both spatially and temporally. To constrain the
electromagnetic characteristics of lightning and its physical/chemical
effects on materials, various methods are utilized, including
rocket-triggered lightning experiments, shock-tube decompression
experiments, and current/voltage impulse experiments. This session aims to
bridge typically disparate disciplines (electrical engineering, atmospheric
electricity, volcanology, and planetary science) by focusing on the unique
findings provided by lightning simulation experiments and how these
experimental methods can be improved to shed light on the known unknowns.
Studies focused on any aspect of simulating or generating lightning in a
laboratory or real-world setting are highly encouraged, particularly if
they can be linked to remote sensing measurements and/or numerical
modelling results.

Invited speakers: Harald Edens, Director of Langmuir Laboratory for
Atmospheric Research, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology; and
Gerhard Wurm, Universität Duisburg-Essen

Conveners: Kimberly Genareau, The University of Alabama; Joshua Mendez
Harper, University of Oregon; and Corrado Cimarelli, Ludwig Maximilian
University of Munich

Abstracts are due August 4th, and we hope to see you there (either in New
Orleans or on-line)!
