*First Symposium on the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes*

On behalf of Núcleo de Investigación en Riesgo Volcánico - Ckelar Volcanes
(Universidad Católica del Norte, Chile), Instituto Geofísico del Perú
(IGP), Instituto Geológico, Minero y Metalúrgico del Perú (INGEMMET) and
Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (Bolivia), and sponsored by IAVCEI and
ALVO, we invite members of the international volcanological community to
participate in the 1st Symposium on the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes,
which will be held between 30 June and 2 July 2021 in a virtual format.

The symposium's objective is to share and discuss the past, current, and
future contributions to the knowledge of this very active volcanic area and
promote collaborations among the participants and their institutions.

The symposium will have three formats of presentations: Keynote speakers
(25 minutes + 5 minutes for questions), oral (15 minutes + 5 minutes for
questions), and posters (with 2 minutes oral pitch). Attendees without
presentations are also welcome. The symposium is scheduled to take place
from 13:00 to 17:00 hrs UTC.

The deadline for registration to the symposium is Monday 31 May 2021 and
can be done exclusively at the following link:

https://forms.gle/g4CMWp7Qj9ayPKVBA

No abstract is required, but the title of the presentation, the thematic
session, and the preferred presentation format (oral or poster) must be
indicated. The symposium is completely free to access (no fee or
registration payment is needed). The official language of the symposium is
English; however, presentations in Spanish can be considered (simultaneous
translation will not be available).

Thematic sessions:

1. Deep magmatic processes

We invite contributions on field observations, petrological, geochemical,
and isotopic data, analogue models of dike propagation, and experimental
petrology of magma ascent, as well as diffusion timescale records based on
the distributions of the chemical compositions in minerals. Similar topics
related to deep magmatic process are also welcome.

2. Geodynamics related to volcanism

Contributions related to physics of volcanic processes, geological
cartography, geomorphology, structural geology, regional tectonics, among
others, are welcome. We encourage to present data from field studies,
geophysical methods, numerical and analogue modeling of volcanic processes,
GIS analysis.

3. Superficial volcanic processes

We invite contributions related to field studies, volcanic stratigraphy,
geophysical methods, numerical and analogue modelling of volcanic
processes, GIS analysis, petrological studies focused on magma plumbing
systems and eruption dynamics.

4. Monogenetic volcanism

We invite contributions focused on field studies, geophysical methods, GIS
analysis, morphometry, petrography, geochemistry, tectonics, among others,
of monogenetic volcanoes.

5. Polygenetic volcanism

We invite contributions focused on field studies, geophysical methods, GIS
analysis, morphometry, petrography, geochemistry, tectonics, eruptive
histories, among others, of polygenetic volcanoes such as stratovolcanoes
and collapse calderas.

6. Geophysics applied to volcanism

We invite contributions on all types of multidisciplinary investigations
related to volcanic seismology, seismic noise tomography, innovative
techniques for the analysis of seismic data collected in volcanic systems,
modeling of the reservoir and fluid rise zones, remote sensing data using
optical satellite images, InSAR and GPS data, among others.

7. Fluid geochemistry

Contributions related to the use of in situ and remote gas measurements,
interpretation of fluid geochemical data, construction of theoretical
models, and estimation of geothermal potential based exclusively on
magmatic and hydrothermal geochemical data are welcome.

8. Volcanic hazards and risks

In this session, we encourage contributions related to objective and
replicable mapping techniques and methodologies of volcanic hazards and
risks, knowledge and experiences with numerical models, and the development
of protocols for the proper use of these analyzes by the community.

9. Cultural implications of volcanism

This session calls on contributions that compile and present legends and/or
cultural implications of volcanoes in the Central Volcanic Zone of the
Andes in a wide spectrum of topics as mythology, legends, art, archaeology,
anthropology, among others.

10. Geoheritage and geoconservation

In this session, we invite contributions about Central Volcanic Zone
geoheritage/geoconservation projects, tourism, and geotourism on volcanoes;
ongoing research on the feasibility of providing an alternative way of
developing the region through geotourism; as well as comparative studies on
other volcanic regions outside the Central Volcanic Zone.
