*Clermont-Ferrand Centre for Volcano Research*

*Seeking world-class PhD students in Solid Earth Sciences*

The Laboratory of Excellence ClerVolc (Clermont-Ferrand Centre for Volcano
Research) consortium involves five laboratories of Clermont-Auvergne
University in Clermont-Ferrand, France (Magmatism-Volcanism, Particle
Physics, Physical Meteorology, Mathematics, Computer Science) and the
Clermont-Ferrand Earth Physics Observatory. The program addresses
fundamental questions in the fields of magma generation, volcano dynamics,
volcanic hazards and the evolution of the early Earth.

We are seeking French and international candidates for four PhD projects,
to start in October of 2021. A three-year grant for each project is
assured, provided a suitable candidate is found.

o From magma ascent to deep-seated-ocean lava flow emplacement: the case
study of the ongoing (since 2018) submarine eruption offshore Mayotte. PhD
directors O. Chevrel (LMV), L. Gurioli (LMV), E. Médard (LMV).
o Equilibrium and kinetic fractionations of sulphur isotopes in magmas. PhD
directors K. Koga (LMV), E. Rose-Koga (LMV).
o Cerium isotopic composition of the upper mantle. PhD directors R.
Doucelance (LMV), M. Boyet (LMV), P. Bonnand (LMV).
o Formation of the Early Earth atmosphere: numerical modelling of the
accretionary contribution. PhD directors J. Monteux (LMV), A. Bouhifd
(LMV), A. Bianco (LaMP), L. Deguillaume (LAMP).

(LMV: Laboratory of Magmatism and Volcanism (Earth Sciences); LaMP:
Laboratory of Physical Meteorology.)
