(https://agraettinger.weebly.com/) *Basics: Students will be based at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences *https://cas.umkc.edu/geosciences/ <https://cas.umkc.edu/geosciences/>* and participate in the Interdisciplinary PhD program (see below) and receive a 12-month stipend as well as tuition remission for three years. *Project: This project will combine experimental, field, and numerical approaches to investigate shallow intrusions into unconsolidated sediment to constrain conditions that let magma pass through, stop, or interact explosively with sediments at small volume volcanoes. The project, through collaboration with the University at Buffalo, will use the Rock Melt Facility (https://geohazards.buffalo.edu/geohazards-field-station/) to forcibly intrude remelted basaltic lava (~30 L) into sediments in a range of saturation states and grain sizes to evaluate the influence of these external conditions and flux on resulting intrusive structures. These experiments will be accompanied by numerical simulations using COMSOL and field work at eroded basaltic phreatomagmatic structures like 71 Gulch, Idaho. *Qualifications: Students must have an interest in experimental and field techniques. Masterâ??s degree in geology, volcanology, geochemistry or related field preferred. Research experience in physical volcanology, petrology, hazards, or computational techniques would be an asset. Critical thinking, problem solving, organizational skills, resourcefulness and reliability are all essential skills. *Interdisciplinary PhD (IPhD): The department of Earth and Environmental Sciences participates in UMKCâ??s IPhD program https://sgs.umkc.edu/interdisciplinary-ph-d-program/. The PhD student would have Geoscience as their major discipline (60% of coursework) and would select a co-discipline (40% of coursework) from another appropriate program at UMKC (i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Social Science Consortium, Humanities Consortium). A co-discipline will be identified based on the interest of the candidate and discussions with Alison Graettinger before applying.
