From: Felix Riede <f.riede@xxxxxxxxx>

*PhD fellowship**: **Modelling volcanism and climate change during the Late
Pleistocene in Europe and their human impacts*

The position is fully funded and open to all nationalities.

This PhD position is part of the ERC CoG project CLIOARCH (
http://cas.au.dk/en/ERC-clioarch/ <https://cas.au.dk/en/ERC-clioarch/>).

The project will address (i) the role of external forcing on rapid climate
changes over Europe by performing state-of-the-art transient global climate
model simulations covering the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition
(15-11ka BP) and including the potential atmospheric radiaitive forcing of
the Laacher See volcanic eruption; and (ii) the impact of these rapid
changes on contemporaneous human populations through (a) downscaling
climate model data to relevant spatial and temporal resolution drawing on
ethnoclimatology, (b) producing estimates of human population densities
using transform functions derived from the ethnographic record.

The project will be co-supervised by Dr. Claudia Timmreck of the
Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, where the candidate is
expected to spend some time.

Application deadline: March 16th

Start date: September 1st
