2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: "Hungerford, Jefferson D" <Jefferson_Hungerford@xxxxxxx> *26-Week Internship Opportunity with the Yellowstone National Park Geology Program This Summer (2021)* This position is offered through the National Park Service's Scientists-in-the-Parks (SIP) Internship Program in partnership with Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) and The Geological Society of America (GSA). Upon successful completion of the SIP internship, the participant is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award. Our Guest Scientist interns receive a stipend of $400/week and either a $125/week housing stipend or Park housing, if it is available. This position will start in May or June 2021. Our geology/geophysics interns are given the opportunity to develop and manage projects relevant to the Yellowstone Geology Program based on their skills and experience. Guest scientists are also encouraged to learn new skills while part of the Yellowstone Geology Program. Our SIP interns have been integral in creating and completing projects essential to our core mission to monitor and inventory Yellowstoneâ??s volcanic features and protect other geologic resources that make the world's first national park extraordinary. The applicant must possess an undergraduate degree in geology, geophysics, or a related geoscience degree by the start of the internship. A candidate either in possession of or in the process of obtaining a masterâ??s degree or PhD in geology or geophysics is preferred. Experience with geologic field work (*i.e.* field data collection) is required. The ability to hike five miles with a 30-pound pack over steep or uneven terrain is required. A solid proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) is required. Proficiency in ArcGIS 10.x or ArcGIS Pro is necessary. Demonstrated skills in programming (Python is preferred) and database management are also necessary. Experience with mobile mapping software such as Collector and Survey 123 is preferred. An applicant must have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Applicants must have a valid driver license. The Guest Scientist intern will be stationed at Mammoth Hot Springs, Wyoming (Park Headquarters). The likely office/field work ratio is 30/70 in the summer season. Overnight stays at government dorms/trailers in the Old Faithful area may be necessary; overnight backpacking may also be necessary. Yellowstone is known for its wildlife, including large animals such as bears, bison, moose, wolves and elk. The selected participant will be encouraged to take seasonal safety training to work safely in Yellowstone's wildlife-rich habitat. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident (â??green-card-holderâ??) between the ages of 18 and 30 years old.
