One volcanology PhD position on â??Geological and volcanological evolution of
the Campi Flegrei caldera: eruption clustering and effects on
caldera dynamicsâ?? is available at Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra e
Geoambientali, University of Bari. Advisor of the PhD is prof.
Roberto Sulpizio (UNIBA), with co-tutorage of Prof. Pierfrancesco Dellino
(UNIBA) and Dr. Antonio Costa (INGV, Bologna). The successful candidate is
expected to develop a collaborative research program (see brief description
in the following) straddling among physical volcanology and numerical
simulations. The PhD will last three years, with a net (after taxes) salary
of around 13,500 Euro per year.

The selection of candidates follows the Italian rules for public selection,
and the procedure can be found at (Geosciences):

Deadline for candidature submission is August 31, 2020 (12:00 h CET).

Final selection is on September 23, 2020.

A preliminary letter of motivation, and a brief CV to Roberto Sulpizio (
roberto.sulpizio@xxxxxxxx) is appreciated but not mandatory.

Short description of the research program.

Geological and volcanological evolution of the Campi Flegrei caldera:
eruption clustering and effects on caldera dynamics

The research topic has its focus on the geology and geophysics of the Campi
Flegrei caldera, which represents the most active caldera volcano in
Europe, with caldera forming events in the last 40 kyrs and more than 60
eruptions within the last 15 kyrs, and one of the highest risk volcanoes in
the world. In particular, the PhD project will be carried out in
collaboration with INGV researchers. It will focus on the integration of
detailed geological and volcanological data already available or to be
collected in the Campi Flegrei area with physical-numerical and statistical
models. The main aim is to have a better comprehension of eruptive
dynamics, structural feedbacks of eruption clustering, and dispersion of
pyroclasts (with particular emphasis to volcanic ash).
