Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate should possess a PhD in a relevant aspect of
Seismology or Geophysics.

Candidates must also have experience in:
â?¢    The application of seismic and other techniques for monitoring active
volcanoes
â?¢    A leadership role and supervision of postgraduate students in related
disciplines

Candidates with the following will have an advantage:
â?¢    Postgraduate degree (e.g. MPhil) or equivalent in Seismology/Geophysics
â?¢    Observatory-type experience working with tectonic and/or volcanic
seismicity in a regional setting
â?¢    Practical experience with Python, Earthworm, Seisan and Seiscomp
â?¢    Experience in the operation of modern telemetered digital seismograph
networks for the detection and assessment of regional earthquakes

A BSc in Earth Science or Geophysics will be considered an asset.



Special Responsibilities

â?¢    Working with a team of technicians, earth scientists and engineers to
provide real-time earthquake and volcanic surveillance in the Eastern
Caribbean
â?¢    Developing a research program, in collaboration with other staff
members
â?¢    Maintaining the regional, instrumental, earthquake catalogue ensuring
its completeness going
forward and backward in time
â?¢    Interpreting seismic data and reporting to the SRC Director regularly
â?¢    Playing a lead role in the operations, maintenance and further
development of seismological data acquisition and processing tools
â?¢    Working with other regional risk reduction stakeholders to strengthen
capacity building for the production and application of earthquake and
volcanic hazard/risk assessment tools in a more consistent manner


Personal Attributes

The Centre places high priority on individuals of integrity who can work
well in a team and student friendly environment. Candidates should also
possess good communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of both
oral and written English is essential. Candidates must also:
â?¢    Be competent in interpreting and manipulating earthquake data, in all
its forms
â?¢    Be competent in computer programming and software used in seismology
â?¢    Be able to communicate science to non-scientists, with diplomacy and
sensitivity, across the entire social spectrum and to government officials
â?¢    Have knowledge of computer programming and software development which
would be highly beneficial
â?¢    Have demonstrable presentation and communication skills, particularly
conveying complex ideas to a range of audiences
â?¢    Be in possession of valid driverâ??s permit, or willing to acquire one
rapidly
