*Announcing the 2020 Jack Kleinman Grants for Volcano Research*

The Community Foundation for Southwest Washington, in cooperation with the
U.S. Geological Surveyâ??s Volcano Science Center (USGS VSC), invites
applications for the 2020 Jack Kleinman Volcano Research Grants Program.
The program is intended to perpetuate and memorialize the attributes
embodied by Jack Kleinman, a USGS employee who died in a kayaking accident
in 1994, to promote collaborative projects on volcanoes among USGS and
university researchers, and to further the educational and outreach mission
of the USGS. Stipends of up to $2,000 are available to senior
undergraduates and graduate students who are conducting research in
volcanology, preferably in the Cascade Range, Aleutian volcanic arc,
Hawaiʻi, Yellowstone, Long Valley/Mono-Inyo Craters, or outside the United
States in an area of interest to USGS. The funds are intended to defray the
costs of conducting field studies, including such items as travel to the
field area, living expenses while in the field, supplies, or analytical
services. Applicants need not be U.S. citizens.

Consideration in the selection of grant recipients will be given to the
characteristics that defined Jack Kleinman: exuberance, integrity,
reliability, loyalty, and the abilities to relish challenge, inspire
enthusiasm in others, and delight in the natural world. An example of the
scope of work envisioned is a field project involving geologic,
geochemical, or geophysical investigation in one of the volcanic areas
listed above. A strong emphasis on fieldwork is highly desirable.
Involvement of a faculty adviser or cooperation with a staff member at one
of the USGS VSC volcano observatories or programs is strongly recommended:
Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), California Volcano Observatory (CalVO),
Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO), Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO),
Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO), or Volcano Disaster Assistance
Program (VDAP). Additional information about the observatories is available
at http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vhp/observatories.php; VDAP information is
available at https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vdap/. To promote projects of
mutual interest, collaboration with a VSC scientist is given considerable
weight in the selection process. Successful applicants are encouraged to
present their results as part of the Kleinman Seminar Series at one of the
USGS facilities and to publish their work in an appropriate research
journal.

Applications should include: (1) a short (3-5 pages) project description
including objectives, strategy, anticipated products, and a project budget;
and (2) two letters of recommendation, including at least one from a
current academic adviser or instructor. The project description and letters
should address explicitly how the project meets the selection criteria
listed above. The budget should specify which costs would be covered with
Kleinman funds and describe any other sources of support for the project as
a whole. If a permit is required to conduct field work, indicate the status
of the permit application in the project description. *Project
description and supporting letters in PDF or Microsoft Word format should
be sent to kleinmangrants@xxxxxxxxxxx <kleinmangrants@xxxxxxxxxxx> with
â??KLEINMAN 2020â?? in the subject line. Applications should include mailing
and email addresses where applicant can be reached.* Applications will be
evaluated by a panel of USGS VSC staff members. The Community Foundation
for Southwest Washington will make final decisions on the grants and notify
applicants of the results. *The deadline for receipt of applications is
March 13, 2020*. Selections will be announced by March 27, 2020.
