Dear Colleagues,
we kindly invite you to submit your abstracts to the session "*S3.18
Application of geological mapping in volcanic areas for hazard assessment,
geothermal potential evaluation and ore geology"* of the next Cities on
Volcanoes 11 conference, that will be held in Heraklion (Crete) from May 23
to 27.
The deadline for submitting the abstract is January 25, 2020.

Best wishes

Gianluca

Description of the session:
*S3.18 Application of geological mapping in volcanic areas for hazard
assessment, geothermal potential evaluation and ore geology*

Although the current trend in volcanology is the increasing use of physical
and mathematical models in order to understand volcanic processes, geology
and field observations remain the basis for volcano studies. Mapping in
volcanic areas are the basis for detailed volcanological, magmatic studies,
computational modeling and for understanding the behavior of volcanoes and
their future activity in terms of volcanic hazards for active volcanoes.
Accurate forecasting of future volcanic event requires a detailed
understanding of its past eruptive activity for extrapolating a possible
behavior into the future but is also critical for establishing guidelines
for exploring economic and energy resources associated with volcanic
systems or for reconstructing the evolution of sedimentary basins in which
volcanism has played a significant role.
The aim of this session is to present studies in which geological mapping
in volcanic areas, stratigraphy, and tephrostratigraphy in volcanic
successions and volcano geology are essential in the hazard assessment,
environmental management and mitigation of the volcanic risk and allow
evaluating and exploring geothermal fields and ore geology. This session is
under the aegis of the IAVCEI Volcano Geology Commission.
