*** 3 PhD opportunities at University of Tasmania, Australia ***

Three exciting PhD projects in submarine volcanology are available at the
University of Tasmania, Australia.
Two projects would start by mid-2020, and the two students will be part of
a 1-month voyage aboard the research vessel RV Investigator in
October-November 2020. The voyage will survey three large submarine
calderas in the Kermadec arc, north of New Zealand. The overarching aim of
the research is to quantify the magma flux of submarine silicic eruptions
at various vent water depths, by using the morphology of giant proximal
sediment waves (anti-dunes) deposited by pumice-rich eruption-fed sediment
flows. The project will include volcanic architecture reconstruction and to
assess thresholds in intensity and style of eruptions in the context of
deep-water caldera-forming silicic volcanism. This threshold framework will
provide a benchmark assessment of the tsunamigenic potential of submarine
volcanism. Collaboration with international teams will be key for this
research program.
- Project 1 will be based on processing and interpretation of seismic
reflection surveys, ship-based sub-bottom profiler and multibeam
bathymetry. Applicants should have strong background knowledge on seismic
data processing and interpretation using the Kingdom suite software.
- Project 2 will focus on description and interpretation of volcanic
and sedimentary textures based on sediment cores, and
interpretation/modelling of sediment fluxes. Applicants should have good
knowledge in eruption and sedimentary processes. Core logging experience
would be an advantage, but is not necessary.

Project 3 can be started in early 2020, and involves geochemical
fingerprinting of submarine-deposited volcanic products in the Kermadec
arc. The project would reconstruct sedimentation patterns at the scale of
the arc, and would include regional atmospheric and ocean current dispersal
analysis. Distal pumice-raft deposits from Havre 2012 eruption will be a
focus of this project. The project is based on dredged samples from SO-255
voyage in the Kermadec arc in 2017, in addition to other legacy voyages
between New Zealand and Australia. The student will actively participate to
future voyages onboard the RV Investigator as well, from which he/she will
acquire part of the sample dataset.

The Volcanology Group at the University of Tasmania has a strong focus on
modern and ancient submarine volcanology. The students will be part of a
vibrant group focussing on understanding eruption and transport processes
in subaerial and marine environments. Our geochemical laboratories include
state-of-the-art SEM, EPMA, XRD and LA-ICP-MS instruments that are
accessible to our students. Hobart and Tasmania are reputed for their
lifestyle, pristine coasts and beaches, and access to wilderness. The
climate is temperate to oceanic and not comparable to mainland Australia.

The University of Tasmania offers full scholarships for domestic (Australia
+ New Zealand) and international students; domestic students (Australia and
New Zealand) are strongly encouraged to apply as these scholarships are
less competitive. Selection of applicants is highly competitive amongst the
School of Natural Sciences, and international applicants should be author
or co-author of a published or accepted paper in a peer-reviewed journal.
The length of the PhD project is 3.5 years and is research intensive.

Interested students should send their CV by end of January 2020 to Dr.
Martin Jutzeler: martin.jutzeler@xxxxxxxxxxx
