9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9 From: Karen Fontijn <Karen.Fontijn@xxxxxxxxx> Dear all, I am looking for a PhD candidate and one Post-Doctoral Researcher (24 months) to join our young volcanology research group at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, for a project on volcanism in Kenya, in collaboration with partners from the geothermal sector. The overall aim of the project is to improve our understanding of the spatial and temporal controls on silicic explosive volcanism and its contributions to volatile degassing in continental rifts. This will be achieved through a combined tephrochronological and rock/gas geochemical approach. The post-doctoral researcher will develop a tephrostratigraphic framework for the southern Kenyan Rift and constrain frequency - magnitude relationships of past eruptions and along-rift eruptive rates. They will work closely with the PhD candidate, who will focus on one of the volcanic complexes in the region, to understand its overall magmatic evolution, volatile budgets and their influence on eruption dynamics. The PhD candidate will initially be funded for 24 months and, upon satisfactory progress after the first year, will be expected to apply for further funding to complete a 4-year study. They should have a Master degree (min. 120 ECTS equivalent) in Geology / Earth Sciences or a related field, and have obtained their diploma no more than 3 years before the date of recruitment. This period of 3 years is extended with one year per childbirth/adoption after obtaining the Master degree. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will be funded for 24 months. At the initial date of recruitment, they should have a PhD in Geology / Earth Sciences or a related field. They must not have obtained their PhD degree more than 6 years before the date of recruitment. This period of 6 years is extended with one year per childbirth/adoption after obtaining the PhD degree. In addition, this position is only open for researchers that are in "international mobility", meaning they have not resided, worked, or studied in Belgium for more than 24 months in the 3 years preceding recruitment. Candidates must be able to demonstrate expertise in physical volcanology and/or igneous geochemistry, and have a strong background in field volcanology. They need to show experience and independence in leading research field campaigns and be willing to undertake such campaigns in Kenya, in full collaboration with Kenyan colleagues. The application deadline for both positions is 27th January 2020. Interviews are expected to be held in February; starting date for both positions is no later than 1st July 2020. Applications should be sent as 1 pdf document to Karen.Fontijn@xxxxxxxxx, and include: - a signed motivation letter - curriculum vitae - contact details of two (PhD position) / three (post-doc) academic referees - transcripts of Bachelor / Master degrees or equivalent (PhD position only) Further details on the project and eligibility criteria for both positions can be found on EurAxess: - PhD Candidate in Earth Sciences (Volcanology): https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/475423 - Post-Doctoral Researcher in Earth Sciences (Volcanology): https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/475428 9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9 ============================================================== Volcano Listserv is a collaborative venture among Arizona State University (ASU), Portland State University (PSU), the Global Volcanism Program (GVP) of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI).
