We are offering a one day, pre-meeting (Monday, May 11, 2020; 8 am to 5 pm)
short course Use of Magmatic Structures for Unraveling the Evolution of
Magmatic Systems: Combined Field, Structural, and Geochemical Techniques

 at the 2020 GSA Cordilleran Section meeting, May 12-14, in Pasadena,
California. The course will be held at the Westin Hotel, Pasadena. Cost
$25. Instructors: Scott Paterson and Katie Ardill (University of Southern
California), Cal Barnes (Texas Tech University) and Vali Memeti (Cal State
University Fullerton).

After a brief overview of magmatic structures, we will explore the
following topics: (a) magma rheology and deformation mechanisms;
(b) Internal magmatic contacts/layering; (c) Melt loss, crystal
clustering, and cumulates; (d) Compositionally defined structures such as
tubes, troughs, plumes, diapirs; (e) Magmatic fabrics and relationships to
strain, flow and pattern interpretation; and (f) Xenoliths, cognate
inclusions and enclaves. For each topic, we will integrate field,
structural, and petrologic/geochemical approaches for evaluating models
proposed to explain their formation and discuss how each structure can be
used as a tool to document spatial-temporal magma histories.

Please come join us. We look forward to a lively gathering!
