After a brief overview of magmatic structures, we will explore the following topics: (a) magma rheology and deformation mechanisms; (b) Internal magmatic contacts/layering; (c) Melt loss, crystal clustering, and cumulates; (d) Compositionally defined structures such as tubes, troughs, plumes, diapirs; (e) Magmatic fabrics and relationships to strain, flow and pattern interpretation; and (f) Xenoliths, cognate inclusions and enclaves. For each topic, we will integrate field, structural, and petrologic/geochemical approaches for evaluating models proposed to explain their formation and discuss how each structure can be used as a tool to document spatial-temporal magma histories.
